ALMIGHTY HOPE
Yes, we can. I’ve witnessed, at least twice this year, in two different languages, the power of this statement. When voices, which started shyly, dare to raise up from whispers to an overwhelming roar, reaching the unattainable.
When I talk about mesmerizing, powerful voices, I don’t mean that is good or bad (history is full of both examples), I’m just pointing out what I see. This ability to ease the rough way of communication, that, I can’t help it, I envy. Don’t ask me how I notice, that may be my own (sometimes painful and not as helpful as I wished it to be) skill.
That’s probably kind of a professional issue, but the conclusion is so discouraging: …. words that matter do not mean the same for two people, even talking the same language! There’s a big complicated weave, made by everyone’s personal experiences, social, cultural, and family background, which give a word a different meaning even for brothers and sisters.
Luckily, we agree about green and red lights (bear in mind we don’t about the right side for driving), or salt and sugar. But what about love, respect, guilt…and all these big words?
Words: the material used to program our blank minds in our early years. And that software, often good intentioned, but not always right, is not that easy to change. I’ve got the theory, that we need an external outstanding figure (like the parents were for kids), to say what we already knew, so that, in the deepest levels of our minds, we can truly accept it.
Voices that awake feelings and shake hearts, remind us the overwhelming power of some forgotten, worn out, misunderstood, but incredibly valuable words. If the term, itself is powerful, what would it be if we sing it all together… That simple word: HOPE. I made it mine long ago. Actually Hope is my second name, I’m Hope’s daughter although death took her away from me, when I was just eleven.
Hope might be the material that the air we breathe is made of, the substance that composes the molecules of our 75% of water, or the main ingredient in the universal glue that keeps the world running together. Because honestly, I don’t think life is possible without hope
