Opening Letter
Dear Friend,
I am writing this to you out of a heart of sympathy and understanding. If you have mental illness of any kind, especially Bi-Polar, than you need to know that you are not alone. I have wrestled with the debilitating illnesses of Bi-Polar and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) and I consider myself a survivor. Yes, like you, I will have mental illness for the rest of my life. I consider myself a survivor, because I have been diagnosed (therefore am not going insane as I once thought), have medications to treat some of the illness and I have the ‘Will Power’ to live!
The first step for me was getting past the denial. I will say that this took way too long, but it is a journey that each of us take individually. The second step for me was getting and continuing treatment and therapy in order to get a record of history and the right diagnosis. Mine is more complicated because of the DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder). There is no medication for DID. Medication is so different for everyone and finding the right combination can take years. Just when you think you have the magic formula, your body adjusts to it and it can be a starting over process. The third step for me was determining that I didn’t want to continue with long, recurring bouts in a Psychiatric Hospital. To be honest, this step took years. The fourth step for me is what I call ‘My Will’.
Each step is taken at a different pace for each individual. I don’t believe there is a magic time table. For me I had to determine the quality of life that I wanted while surviving with mental illness. As a writer and someone who had a journal most of my life, it became apparent that I needed to apply these skills to my life long recovery process. I know that everyone is not comfortable with writing, expressing thoughts on paper or tracking anything on a consistent basis. However, it is my experience as time goes on that this process not only helps myself, but my doctor, therapist, friends and family.
This book is a format of my footprints in my life journey. I hope you can use it as a guide to create your own. Remember I have no medical expertise, just another person like you struggling to make sense of and survive mental illness. I have noticed that there are a lot of tracking records for illnesses like diabetes, so I wanted to assemble a Bi-Polar Workbook not only to help myself, but others.

Theodocia McLean Book, 'Birth of a Manuscript' is a self-help reference guide for new authors who would like a little help on formatting a manuscript to met industry publishing standards. It is also a reference with publishing and marketing tips.
Congratulations! The very fact that you are looking at this book tells me that either you intend to write a book or are well on your way in the process. Some writers can sit down and pound out a book four times a year as their creative juices flow like maple sap in the winter. My poetry flows like that. I wake up with a poem in my head that literally beats me up until I write it down. My book ‘Time Traveler’s Postscripts-Journal of a Time Traveler’ took several years to write after the concept was born. My book ‘The Nephilim Phenomenon’ took only a few months as it too beat me up until I wrote it, in fact I had to stop my work on ‘Time Traveler’s Postscripts-Journal of a Time Traveler’ in order to write ‘The Nephilim Phenomenon’.
Then there are those writers and I believe they are more the norm; that think about a book for years and toy with the idea of putting it to print. My book ‘The Stormy Side of Theodocia’ was half a lifetime in the making. I have kept journals and scrapbooks through the years and worked an outline and timeline on and off in a notebook through the years. It wasn’t until 2004 when I was able to go back and the visit the island where I was born and petition a judge for all my adoption papers that I seriously started to put together a manuscript.
Often time, books like my ‘Footprints In My Life Journey’ and this one are written out of the necessity and desire to help others. Writers who have been the most successful often state that it is “best to write what you know, have experienced, or have a great passion for”. So that is why I am writing this. I figure if I can help make just one other writer’s journey a little easier, because I share what I have learned, then I am being a responsible writer. So I hope you find the information in this book beneficial in birthing your manuscript and I hope it saves you time and energy in the long run.
As writers we need to communicate and share with each other. I have several website resources located at the back of this book that I hope will help you with your publishing and marketing process. I also have hope that you will communicate with me, as I have listed my websites, and would dearly to love to hear of your writing journey, failures, and successes.
If you have done your research, created your outline and timeline, and started to develop your characters on paper, it is time to start writing and birth this manuscript. Keep in mind that when a customer picks up your book in a hard copy in a book store they will thumb through it. Your words will not be the thing that jumps out at them, but your formatting will. So let’s begin at the beginning.

Theodocia McLean was born on Beals Island, in Downeast Maine, in 1954. After being adopted twice, she longs to be connected to the Island and to her roots. Her love for writing began when her fifth grade teacher captured her imagination with creative writing assignments while she was living away from home in a harsh, punitive private school environment. A song that she sings everyday is the only link that she has to Clara, her one special friend, who made daily life bearable for a short time in that dreadful place. She longs for the day when someone, even a stranger, will show her the proof that she desperately needs on whether her friend really died that terrible day. ‘The Stormy Side of Theodocia’ deals with her life from 1954-1977. Writing is therapy and telling her story takes her experience out of the shadows into the light. She hopes that her readers will muster up the courage to tell their story and thus begin their own healing journey.

The Stormy Side of Theodocia
This book is a great read of the life of Theodocia as she had experienced various life situations in the turmoil of living in different homes and her home life.
You will see the traumatic events that led to her DID and will find that upon reading her second book 'Stormy Journey' (which I am privileged to know that it is coming) the effects that the trauma had in the diagnosis of the DID.
There are several situations in this book that I believe have occurred to other children and were never spoken about just as Theodocia experienced as well.

Writing is one of the greatest tools that she has discovered in her life skills toolbox, which helps her continue on her healing journey.
Follow through the years, of heartbreak and successes in “Theodocia's Heart Songs,” a literal expression of Theodocia's life in poetic form. I recommended this book for those who need an emotional up lift. I was quite touched by this reading, and learned a lot about the writer’s heart. She expresses herself and the trials of her life, quite well through her touching words. Great job Theodocia!
