Sweet will of God – it brings to mind the love of God within which that will is ensconced, making it impossible that God could ever do us harm but only good as long as we abide in His will. The will of God also reminds us of mankind’s salvation and of Jesus’ intense suffering so that we might have that salvation. It takes us back to the wonderful words of love and compassion He uttered during His stay on this earth. They are the authoritative figures that control his or her little world. We should be childlike in not trying to apply logic to what is clearly God’s will. It has been an intriguing task and a difficult one because of the long time intervening between the life and the biography. All men are complex beings and Karl F. Smith certainly had his share of complexities. But God has demonstrated in the life of this man that He can take the yielded, complex and flawed person (which applies to us all) and make him or her an effective tool for good. The key to such use is that the tool must be yielded. Without controversy, K.F. Smith was that yielded tool.

In our present adversities God is not tormenting us. There is a purpose in His permitting the hot fires of purging to rage all around us. God has set us aside for a certain work and we have to undergo the pain of being molded into a form different from our original sinful one. God is allowing the fires of purging to work their work of mellowing and maturing us. He is molding and shaping us in the fire and making us into the vessels of gold He wants us to be. We have been sanctified or set aside for that end.

I agree...that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are each distinct one from the others. Yet...at times there is a subtle blurring of identities, thus: when the Father and Jesus are seen as one ("I and my Father are one" – John 10.30, 17.22) or Jesus is viewed as the Holy Spirit (“the Spirit of Jesus" – Acts 16.7 RSV) or the Father and Holy Spirit are co-identified (compare Mat. 1.20 in which the Holy Spirit begot Jesus – and the one who begets is always the father – with the many times Jesus refers to the Father as MY Father). But...are they not all ONE God? Are they not of the same essence?

Some say it has no relevance for us, and some aver that we should obey each injunction of the Ten Commandments. We should note two things: 1) Jesus did not destroy the law; and 2) He fulfilled it. The law has indeed been discarded (Heb. 8.13) as far as it concerns us directly, but it has not been destroyed: Jesus fulfilled it in Himself. It is no longer directly applicable to us today, but there are many tenets of the Old Covenant that Jesus and the apostles inculcated in the New.

Spiritual ambition has more restrictive boundaries and limitations. There is not as much freedom to connive and to manipulate people. Nor can you step on your brother’s back to attain your goal. Spiritual ambition is driven and guided by LOVE. The Christian who wants to “be somebody” has to operate by the laws of selflessness and reaching out to help others. This of course casts a pall of divine rejection on any work, great or small, that is based on any other motivation.
