The Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the Gulf

The Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the GulfThe Postal Agencies in Eastern Arabia and the Gulf (book)

Hardcover Print: $51.64

This volume is reproduced by kind permission of Neil Donaldson and HH Sales Ltd.. It is the central text for Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf) States postal history and it provides the 'numbering system' used by those involved in this collecting area. If you are interested in Muscat, Oman, Guadur, Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar, Abu Dhabi or, more generally, the BPAEA then this volume is valuable reading. The book is, essentially, a reprint of the first edition which was published in 1975. Due to the quality and method of printing the original edition (and limitations imposed by how this version was created) some images lack detail. Time has added further information; the 'Supplement' can be acquired elsewhere. This book is the key text for those wishing to understand the postal history of this area, but it is more than a dry postal history reference book--it is also a great read!

An Introduction to U.K. 1st and 2nd Class Official MailAn Introduction to U.K. 1st and 2nd Class Official Mail (book)

Print: $24.14

2008 award winner! This booklet provides an introduction to 1st and 2nd Class Official Mail in the UK, with a focus on the early years of the two-tier system. It has, as its basis, a selection of articles published in various philatelic magazines and booklets over many years. The only previous attempt to discuss these marks, of which we are aware, is by John F. Gilbert. His '1st Class markings on Government Official Stationery' was published in 1974 and is now difficult to find. Our booklet is the sole, readily available resource on this key change to the British postal system. This change has been ignored for too long. Awarded a Large Silver at the Australian Canberra Stamp Show 2008 in the National Class. 43 sides, with full colour illustrations only. Key words- 1st Class mail, 2nd Class Mail, First Class Mail, Second Class Mail.

Print: $12.93

This booklet is based on letters from two tiny islands in the Western Isles (Outer Hebrides) of Scotland, namely Boreray and Killegray. Primary material from these islands is basically impossible to find. These letters provide a snapshot of how the wealthy lived at that time; a marked change to the normal croft / peasant / working class focus of island histories. The letters were to a lawyer with strong family connections in Skye and Vallay; he was part of the Macdonald 'chief' line. He was also a major Edinburgh lawyer and a good friend to Sir Walter Scott. This book adds detail to the life of John Maclean of Boreray, the inhabitants of Vallay and the Campbells of Killegray and Strond. It provides, as well, a useful insight into the economy of the time throughout the Western Isles, and of the people's mood on Uist. The book also adds to the postal history of these islands and of Skye. It is a unique glimpse into two islands that time has now forgotten.

The Duck Decoy Pond of Hale: A Rural Sketch

The Duck Decoy Pond of Hale: A Rural SketchThe Duck Decoy Pond of Hale: A Rural Sketch (book)

Print: $6.00

'The Duck Decoy Pond of Hale: A Rural Sketch' comes with a new introduction and further information about Hale Hall, the 'Childe of Hale', the 'Childe of Hale Hotel' and the Unsworth family. (James Unsworth, who was gamekeeper at the Decoy Pond when the 'Rural Sketch' was written in 1871, is shown on the front cover along with his dog, Jack.) It also includes verses sung at Brasenose College Oxford relating to the 'Childe of Hale'. The booklet, consequently, provides the detail needed to understand the importance of the Decoy Pond as, although once common, there are now only three surviving Decoy Ponds. The booklet is a wonderful read for those concerned with our rural heritage or our natural history (and specifically birds, but especially ducks). It is also of importance if you are interested in the history of Hale, Lancashire, Cheshire or have the surname Unsworth! It comes with many black and white photographs. Overall it's a delightful celebration of local history.

Aspects of Omani Postal History

Aspects of Omani Postal HistoryAspects of Omani Postal History (book)

Print: $22.38

This book is a complete (we think) database of all the postal markings of Muscat and Oman since the start of the postal service in the mid 1860s until a little after the year 2000. It builds on - and revises - the work of Donaldson in the early 1970s. There is no other detailed print reference available for Oman and as such it is a core document for all collectors interested in this area. It is profusely illustrated and has detailed auction results. You need this book to provide a framework for your own collection. It's an important addition to Gulf philately. An early version of this book was awarded Bronze at the British Chester National Stamp Show 2003 and this version earned a Silver Bronze at the 8th New Zealand Philatelic Literature Exhibition in 2003.

The Official Envelopes of State of Oman and Dhufar from 1967 to 1986The Official Envelopes of State of Oman and Dhufar from 1967 to 1986 (book)

Print: $20.05

This study is based on 40 years interest in the area and is written by the Oman expert, Joachim Duester. Although centered on official envelopes used by a rebel group for distributing their stamps and propaganda, it also provides an overview of the history of Oman which forms the background of the stamp issues, the 'legal' framework for the postal use of the rebel stamps, and the personalities involved. It also has an extensive bibliography of all references known to the author relating to State of Oman and Dhufar stamp issues. The key part, though, is a catalogue of the official envelopes. The book is thoroughly illustrated (in black and white, and colour), and very thoroughly categorised. Dates of use for First Day Covers (and the stamps used for this purpose) and ordinary mailings are provided. This book is important for everyone interested in the postal history (and even just the history) of Muscat and Oman. It is also of great interest to those concerned with Arabian Gulf Postal History.

This is a very detailed index covering all of the first 19 editions of the Arabian Gulf States Postal History Quarterly. The Quarterly was an important journal as it was jammed full of information and had many illustrations. But once read and enjoyed it was always very difficult to find a particular piece of information as it was always an incredible mix of articles and pieces. If you are serious about exploring Gulf postal history you need this 'Index' to go with your copy of the Quarterlies.

Make Your Child Smarter

Make Your Child SmarterMake Your Child Smarter (book)

Print: $6.93

My children were accelerated two years at school and are now both studying to become Doctors of Philosophy at Cambridge University. I’m so pleased they have got to where they deserve to be. Many people have asked how this happened—this book is my answer. Not all of this book will work for every child but the principles in this book apply to all. This book is my reflection on parenting; it is about how my wife and I enriched our children so they could run though secondary school and easily go to one of the greatest universities in the world. Not all children will be able to go so far, but all children can maximize their potential if parents are prepared to put in some real effort. Schooling is the icing on the cake of home experience. This book is about what sort of home experiences make your child be able to do well academically.

This book is written by an experienced teacher and author. It is in three parts, the core being (overall) an introduction to each poet, the poem, some questions and then an A4 'comment' on each poem to help students engage with the poem. Sometimes a poem is short so the comment is on the same side, sometimes a poem is long and has gone onto the second side, so restricting the comment. In a few instances the poem can not be provided due to copyright but there is always a comment. Two pages is the limit per poem (photocopying!). The poets are--Lovelace, Asquith, Newbolt, Hood, Tennyson, Byron, Southey, Whitman, Dobell, Anne Bronte, Kipling, Hardy, Collins, Housman, Scott and Seward. There is also advice for teachers, ICT support, general comments on the poems and examination advice. You need this resource as I believe nothing else like it is on the market! An equivalent resource published by a commercial publisher would cost around £40+. Please note that the poems may not all be on the current syllabus.

A world without cancer is 'quackery', as stated by the American Cancer Society, as this substance is in essence banned in the US and the EU as there is no scientific base for its theories at all and its key component is the poison cyanide. Don't fall for the 'alternative medicine' illogical (best viewed as a 'paranoid conspiracy theory') position. This booklet is a short, simple, factually packed summary of why those who believe in a world without cancer don't know what they are talking about. It will also provide you with an excellent basis for understanding the whole illogical area of 'alternative / complementary medicine'. Buy it and save yourself a fortune! We all want a world without cancer but this stuff wont cure it... Laetrile B17 Amygdalin wont make a world without cancer; it will just steal your money (do you really think taking cyanide is wise?). There is no science in the alternative medicine claims--this junk has been shown, time after time, to be a killer....

This is a revised and greatly extended version of my 'Laetrile / B17 / Amygdalin is Rubbish' and is best considered as a polemic exploring the mindset (ideology) of 'Alternative and Complementary Medicine' believers and it also has an overview of many of its practices (including the evil laetrile issue). It will annoy believers in ACM a lot; it is written for people who support scientific medicine. In it topics such as--the ACM conspiracy theory, ACM as a quasi-fundamentalist religion, ACM as anti-business (even though it is a huge business), ACM as an anti-Western belief and many more are explored. This book is about logic and Science; you will find here a clear explanation of the rather dark area of capitalism which is Alternative / Complementary Medicine. ACM is not a harmless past-time; it is part of the dumbing down of the world...

Alexander Sutherland, M. A.Alexander Sutherland, M. A. (book)

Print: $6.84

This Australian history book was previously published in 1908 and comes with a new introduction. The introduction explores little known aspects of the cultural life of the 'landboomers' of the Melbourne elite in the 1890s. In it Henry Gyles Turner, Alexander Sutherland and William Turner are discussed as all three knew each other well. But do not forget Alexander Sutherland's work with Melbourne University and the private schools of Victoria. He taught at Hawthorn Grammar School, Scotch College and Carlton College (of which he was Head). He also wrote various school textbooks (especially in Geography and History) which were important at the time. Alexander Sutherland also wrote verse, stories, histories, science and journalism. He also tried to enter politics. He was born in Scotland but was central to the Victorian society which seemed to eat and breathe new ideas--as such he deserves to be better remembered, as do his friends Henry Gyles Turner and William Turner.

William Turner was a phenomenal man. He was born at Kirkconnel, Dumfriessshire, Scotland in 1832 and died in Australia in 1919 at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. In between he worked as a storekeeper at Beechworth in the gold rush, was Head-teacher of a primary school and had a major career at the Commercial Bank of Australia mainly in the 1870s -1890s where he was for a while second / third in charge of the entire bank. At this time he was also a copious writer of pamphlets, and friends with the intelligentsia of Melbourne (such as Henry Gyles Turner - no relation). He then commenced a new career as a pastoralist in outback Queensland at Dangarfield, near Roma. He then went to Wagga Wagga in N.S.W. to stay at one daughter's homestead. William had nine children by two wives; the maker of this calendar is glad he lived as without him I would not be here! THIS CALENDAR IS A 2008 REPRINT OF THE 2007 CALENDAR.
