Welcome to the lair of the barefoot sisters. Yes, we really are those sisters who hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2000-01, Maine to Georgia to Maine, barefoot for much of the way. Though both of us have gone on to other pursuits (myself, Susan, to ecology, and Lucy to art), the Trail still holds a special place in our thoughts. Splitting our time between gainful employment and writing for two years, we transcribed the best stories from our hike.

These books are for everybody who dreams of adventure, and especially for those who dream of the Appalachian Trail. When I was writing, I thought particularly of a woman we met in Harper's Ferry in 2000. She had just been through her second hip replacement surgery. It was clear she would never walk the Trail herself. Yet she read every book she could find about the Trail, and she talked to every hiker she met. In these books, we wanted to bring the Trail experience to life, so that everyone-- even those who will never hike a step of the AT-- will be able to share our journey.
