BASILISK STOREFRONT ~ Publishing some of my work via Lulu is an experiment in using print-on-demand technology to make independently produced writing available to readers quickly and directly. When you buy a POD book, you are supporting both independent artists and the environment. Here's how. The author gets about 75% of the profit after production expenses on each book (as opposed to a much lower percentage in traditional publishing). So for example: a $7.00 book costs about $5.00 to make. Lulu recoups that cost and takes .50 cents or so, and the author gets about $1.50. Also, books don't have to go out of print because the need for expensive warehousing is eliminated. Last but not least, because books are printed only when purchased, no paper or energy resources are wasted in overproduction or storage of excess copies. The down side: per-book costs for POD are higher because they aren't mass-produced, there is no marketing except word of mouth via readers and what the author has time to do herself, and there’s a lot of garbage out there. Like pretty much everything else, POD technology can be used for good or evil. Thanks for supporting the good by buying independently produced books crafted with care, and if you like it, pass the word. ~ Jessamyn Smyth http://www.jessamynsmyth.com UPDATE: I have pulled "Koan Garden" offline while I finish a trilogy of Wu Wei Yin stories - more news, and available books, soon.
