Many Westerners get their first exposure through Japanese animation and comics. Hanako has unusual playmates and teachers, such as the river boy kappa, dragon-horse kirin, and tengu warriors. She's pretty extraordinary herself, too! Book rated for ages 10 and up. Some of the graphics may be too scary and intense for younger children. The illustrations were done by Alfred Avila, writer and illustrator of Mexican Ghost Tales of the Southwest (Houston: Arte Publico Press, 1994), who lived and worked in Japan as a member of the U.S. armed forces.
