THREE WORLDS AND THE HARVEST OF THIS WORLD

THREE WORLDS AND THE HARVEST OF THIS WORLDTHREE WORLDS AND THE HARVEST OF THIS WORLD (book)

One major influence on Russell's beliefs was Nelson Barbour who was the publisher of the Adventist magazine, The Midnight Cry which had a circulation of 15,000. It proclaimed that Jesus would return visibly in 1874. When Jesus didn't return, Barbour was at first puzzled. One of Barbour's followers noted that the Emphatic Diaglott translation of Matthew 24, the word parousia translated as coming was rendered as "presence." It was suggested that Barbour had the date of Christ's return right (1874) but had expected but had wrongly expected a visible return. Barbour then came to believe that Jesus was invisibly "present" since 1874. Most of his readers didn't accept this explanation of his prediction of Christ's return, resulting in his readership dwindling. However, one person who did accept this explanation was Charles Russell. Therefore, Russell and Barbour joined forces to write this book outlining through a series of charts, dates and diagrams when mankind could expect Jesus to return.

Born in New Hampshire, George Storrs was converted and joined the Congregational Church at the age of 19. He felt called to preach, and joined the Methodist ministry in 1825 through the influence of a godly Methodist minister. He preached much about slavery, even being arrested in 1835 while praying for the slaves during an antislavery society meeting. He was set free after a trial. In 1837 he studied what the Bible had to say about the state of the dead after reading a tract on the subject. His conclusions led him to leave the Methodist church. In 1842 he published six sermons he had given on the topic. The same year he heard the Advent message, and began preaching the soon coming of Christ, distributing copies of his "Six Sermons" as he preached. George Storrs was one of the men instrumental in forming the thoughts and opinions of Charles Taze Russell, early president of the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society.

In 1876, Barbour received correspondence from Charles Russell. Russell had seen a copy of the Herald and was interested since their scriptural viewpoints since they were similar to those discovered by a Bible study group Russell was pastor of in Pittsburgh. The two compared notes: Russell enlightening Barbour on the nature of Christ's return, the Ransom, and the errors of the creeds; Barbour enlightening Russell regarding the biblical and prophetic chronology showing that the "harvest" had begun, and that the return of Christ, and the Rapture, were due to occur in 1878. Barbour informed Russell that his readership was dwindling because his subscribers were disappointed Adventists who remembered the "Great Disappointment". Russell encouraged Barbour to build his subscription list, and gave him several thousand dollars to begin the workings of a ministry which would result in the printing of the book Three Worlds.
