1. Bible Version Encyclopedia

The Bible Version Encyclopedia (BVE) is a reference for anyone who studies, reads or collects different versions of the Bible. This book grew out of Pastor Bradford Taliaferro’s study over a period of ten years. His goal was to produce a thorough, affordable, handy reference.

This edition includes just over 500 different versions of the Scriptures. Most are full Bibles, Old Testaments or New Testaments. A few partial translations are included when those show interesting or unusual characteristics.

This reference includes internet-only versions, unique and unusual translations and historical versions along with the many standard Bibles. Scripture samples, bibliographic entries, translator lists, revision connections and source texts are noted whenever possible.

The BVE fills a gap in similar works. On one side are the many guides covering only a few versions. On the other side are expensive, bulky, awkward volumes. The BVE entries are easy to read, clear and concise. This book is also one fifth or less the cost of the major references, bringing it well within the budget of the average scholar, student, pastor and church.

Simply creating a list is not enough. Many versions have several names or are simply titled “Holy Bible.” The key to making this reference so useful is its indexes. Versions are indexed by title, alternate names, translator, abbreviation, date, source texts, translation methods, translation biases and more. Tables are included to help determine revisions of particular versions.

Statistics of Versions Included:

  • 191 different Whole Bibles
  • 26 different Old Testaments
  • 24 different Psalms
  • 234 different New Testaments
  • 29 different partial translations
  • Total of 504 different versions!

Features:

  • Thorough Indexing enabling easy searches
  • Bibliography of English Bible History, Bible Facsimiles and Bible Reprints
  • Version "Family" Difference charts
  • Resources for further study
  • Economical, yet thorough
  • Also available in hardback

2. God's Timeless Word

God's Timeless Word: His Message, Our History, Your Bible is a book for every Bible reader. This book traces the transmission of the Bible from inspiration to that Bible on your shelf.

The historical section is brief - an introduction for the average church goer. This book doesn't stop at a simple historical snapshot - it continues on to discuss modern translations, characteristics of good and bad translations, choosing a Bible, using a Bible and getting deeper into your Bible.

4. Bible Lover's Puzzle Book

Ever heard of the "Bad Math" Bible? Or the "Bugges" Bible? Do you know the longest word in the Bible? Is there a secret signature in the Bible? Is there one verse in the Bible that contains all the letters of the Alphabet? If so, in what version? These puzzles and more are included in this fun little exploration of the Bible.

This work is brief - focusing not on Bible trivia but on Bible history and wording. Using a computer database, I have generated the most detailed answer to the "alphabet verse puzzle" ever made. Answers are included for all the quizzes.

5. A Scripture Sample Book

This little book is a result of the study that went into developing The Bible Version Encylopedia. There are scripture samples from 328 different versions of the English Bible. Whenever John 14:6 is available, that is used. When a translation does not include John 14:6 an alternate verse was chosen.

6. Gospels for Hackers

2006 - Gospels for Hackers (text format). This is a humorous, yet actually readable triglot of the four Gospels. Every word of the King James Version has been transliterated into three forms of "elite speech." This "l33T sP33K" is in three levels - lite, medium and hard. Read things like "7H3N j053pH B3!n6 R@!53d fR0m 5133P d!d @5 7H3 @n631 0f 7H3 10Rd H@D B!DD3N h!m." Whether it is for a gag gift for that "techie" on your list or as a sneaky form of evangelism for a programmer you know, you'll enjoy this truly unusual Bible.

Along with the study of the Bible in English comes the study of the English language itself. Many words we Christians use regularly were first coined by Bible translators. Our language has gone through several phases such as Old English, Middle English, and Modern English.

Facsimile Bibles

Facsimile Bibles are exact photocopies of the originals which are often hidden away in a museum. This means you will be reading exactly what was printed on a page 300, 400 or even 500 years ago. It also means that you will see the smudges, tears, dirt and spots that may obscure small portions of text. I have attempted to note the facsimiles with major problems, but please note that all may have some errors.

5. Post 1901 Bibles

American Baptist Publication Society Bible. 1913. This is a two volume edition (due to lulu.com limitations) of a Bible published by the American Baptist Publication Society in 1913. The ABPS took over this Bible from the American Bible Union in either 1882 or 1883. The ABPS first published this version in 1891. This is a facsimile; a few pages had underlining on them and there was some distortion toward the center of some pages. However, the Scripture is readable throughout. This is a 6x9 volume, available in hardback (volume 1) 724pp $41.00, hardback (volume 2) 679pp $40.00, paperback (volume 1) 724pp $28.00, paperback (volume 2) 679pp $27.00.

Text Bibles

Text Bibles reprints of ancient versions, but are made in a word processor. Every effort is made to ensure that these are kept in original spelling. These bibles will not look exactly the same, nor will they be laid out on the page the same as the original. However, using modern typesetting makes for a clearer, more readable text.

2. Middle English Bibles

Terence Noble. Wycliffe New Testament (Modern Spelling Edition). 1390. This is the New Testament of Terence Noble's modern spelling update of the Wycliffe Bible of the 14th century. From the back cover:
With the spelling up-dated and many obsolete words replaced, the document you now hold in your hands is a fair and accurate representation of John Wycliffe's and John Purvey's 14th century translation of the very first English vernacular New Testament. This is their New Testament with modern spelling – not some 21st century variation on a medieval theme. The melodies and harmonies are distinctly Wycliffe's and Purvey's. Only now, they are sung with words that we can all understand. Six centuries later, you can now read what those common folk were themselves at long last able to read (or, more likely, have read to them). Simple, direct words, with their own charm and rhythm, their own humble, cogent beauty. Sophisticated and graceful words, their originality and newness making the well-known and fondly remembered fresh, alive, and interesting once again. All because Wycliffe, Purvey, and their compeers cared so deeply and sacrificed so dearly. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 664pp $44.00, paperback 664pp $30.00.

Wycliffe Bible. 1395. John Wycliffe is credited as the first to translate the Bible into English. Nicholas Hereford is known to have translated much of the Old Testament. John Purvey, one of Wycliffe's associates, produced a revised version of Wycliffe's Bible in 1388. Demand was high, but since these Bibles had to be copied by hand it was difficult to keep up. The Wycliffe Bible is difficult for us to read today as it is written in "Middle English." This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 693pp $45.00, paperback 693pp $32.00.

3. Pre-1611 Bibles

Tyndale Bible. 1534. William Tyndale first began printing the New Testament in Cologne in 1525. However, he was soon stopped from continuing and had to flee to Worms. The 1525 printing is known as the "Cologne Fragment" or "Cologne Quarto." He finished printing a full new testament in 1526. By 1534 he had published the five books of the Pentateuch as well. His was the first English New Testament printed on a printing press. So opposed was the church to the Bible in English that Tyndale was eventually caught and executed. However, even while in prison he continued to translate portions of the Bible. This is a text reprint of his Pentateuch, Jonah and the New Testament in original spelling. This is a 6x9 volume, available in dustcover 635pp $42.00, hardback 635pp $42.00, paperback 635pp $30.00.

Coverdale Bible. 1535. Myles Coverdale was the first to publish a complete English Bible. Coverdale's work was based on the Zurich Bible of Zwingli, the Vulgate, the Latin text of Paginius, Martin Luther's Bible and Tyndale's New Testament. This was the first Bible to introduce chapter summaries instead of just chapter headings. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 687pp $44.00, paperback 687pp $33.00.

Great Bible. 1540. Essentially a revision of the Matthew Bible, this Bible got its name from its large size. It had several other names: The Cranmer Bible (he wrote the preface), Cromwell Bible (he did the most to prepare for its publication), Whitechurch Bible (he printed several editions), and the Chained Bible (it was chained to pulpits ). Coverdale worked on this Bible as well, but this version is not known by his name. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 682pp $45.00, paperback 682pp $34.00.

Bishops' Bible. 1568. This version was created by Matthew Parker and other bishops (hence the name). While the Geneva Bible was a superior translation, it's study notes made it unacceptable for use by the Church of England. This Bible is a revision of the Great Bible. This would be the last version before the Authorised* Version (AV) of 1611. Some refer to it as the rough draft for the AV. This is also considered the second "authorised" version. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 640pp $44.00, paperback 640pp $32.00.

Geneva Bible. 1587. This is a later edition of the Geneva Bible of 1560. It is the 1587 revision of the original 1560. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 698pp $45.00, paperback 698pp $32.00.

4. 1611 to 1901 Bibles

Authorised Version. 1611. In 1611, King James wanted a new translation of the Scriptures. While his reasons were not holy at all, the work done on this translation was quite good. No book has been reprinted more than this translation and its revisions. Take a careful look, though, at the spellings and uses of the words. It is NOT the same as the "King James Version" we are familiar with. Our King James Bibles are really a 1769 (or later) revision of this original work. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 728pp $45.00, paperback 728pp $33.00.

John Wesley NT. 1755. John Wesley translated this work when a debilitating illness prevented him from travelling and preaching. He wanted to create a New Testament that people could understand. The English of the KJV was no longer that commonly spoken. He "examined minutely every word of the New Testament in the original Greek" to create his translation. Though done during this illness during which he expected he might die, this work was really the culmination of 25 years of study begun in 1729. This is a 6x9 volume, available in hardback 479pp $36.00, paperback 479pp $24.00.

Noah Webster Bible. 1833. Noah Webster, best known for his English language dictionary, also produced his own modern English translation of the Bible. While his was an excellent and highly accurate translation, it did not gain wide usage due to the popularity of the King James Bible. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 628pp $44.00, paperback 628pp $31.00.

Isaac Leeser OT. 1853. Leeser took 17 years to complete his translation. This was the standard American Jewish Bible until the Jewish Publication Society's work in 1917. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 689pp $45.00, paperback 689pp $33.00.

Alexander Campbell's Acts. 1858. This translation of Acts was later included in the American Bible Union New Testament. This volume was produced to aid scholars of the American Reformation movement. This is a 6x9 volume, available in hardback 54pp $21.00, paperback 54pp $8.00.

Holy Bible - American Standard Version. 1901. This is a text (done in a word processor) reprint of the American Standard Version of the Holy Bible (1901). This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in hardback 734pp $46.00, paperback 734pp $33.00.

Novelty Items

Gospels for Hackers. 2006. This is an 8.5x11 volume, available in paperback 660pp $25.00.

10/02/2008 - I just received an e-mail from Lulu.com that printing prices will be raised. It appears that for the museum store this will mostly affect hardback books. I will attempt to adjust pricing as quickly as the changes take effect (scheduled for Oct. 28th right now). If you were planning to purchase any Bibles, you might consider doing it now before the prices go up (probably about $3.00 USD per book).
08/27/2008 - Added The Apocrypha (1894) of the English Revised Version to facsimile Bibles.
08/25/2008 - Added The Song of Solomon in 24 English Dialects to facsimile Bibles. Work continues on the Great Bible. I have a helper working on cleaning up the Old Testament pages now.
05/15/2008 - A hard drive failure on my system has put me behind quite a bit on getting facsimiles ready. I am having to redo some of my work. The Old Testament of the Great Bible, then the Coverdale 1535 Old Testament are next.

07/19/2007 - Facsimile of Myles Coverdale's 1538 Latin/English Diglot New Testament has been added. Courtesy of the "JF" series!
07/10/2007 - Work has started on a facsimile of Coverdale's 1535 Bible. Click here for a sample page. I am considering putting this together "as-is" without the extensive editing it would take to remove the black edges. Let me know your opinion! The editing takes a great deal of time and usually does not enhance the readability of the text. The sample page here is cleaned up quite a bit from its original state. Producing facsimiles this way would speed up the process and expedite releasing several other facsimiles that are waiting to be printed. Also, if you know of software that could fix black edges, skewed pages, noise and other scanning problems please let me know.
07/09/2007 - Facsimile of Tyndale's 1531 translation of Jonah has been added. The New Testament of the Tyndale text Bible has been finished by the proofer and is being formatted.

The short history of this Museum "store" is as follows: I began taking an interest in historical English Bibles a few years ago. I began collecting facsimiles of the older English Bibles. However, I soon learned that many were not available anywhere. I found computer files that allowed me to print copies for my museum and produced my own facsimiles through lulu.com. Others expressed an interest in having these facsimiles as well. Hence, the online store was started.

All the reprints are new - printed on demand through Lulu.com. Lulu.com handles the printing and the checkout. Thus reprints are professional quality paperbacks and hardbacks. Also you will be able to use a credit card, paypal or other method of payment through their checkout system.

Feel free to browse through the many reprints offered here. Each one has a short description - to find out pricing and see a preview of the book simply click on the link at the end of the description (i.e. paperback, hardback).

The store is able to offer two different types of Bibles. Facsimile Bibles are photocopy duplicates of the originals. Text Bibles are edited and printed in regular text as one might with a word processor.

I love God's Word. I truly enjoy studying the history of His Word, especially in English. If you have ideas, comments, questions, suggestions or want to volunteer on a project please contact me (click here).
