Satice James ~
Once posed the question, 'If you had to be known for one thing a hundred years from now, would it be as a writer of African American descent, or as an African American writer?
Her answer, "I'd want to be known as an African American writer pure and simple."
Discussion followed among those present once she'd given her answer.
Wouldn't that be a way to nullify who she was, what she hoped to do with her writing?
Wouldn't others respect her more if she was a great writer who happened to be African American?
Satice James is a great writer, yet it is important to her that others know she is an African American writer due to the history that precedes her. A researcher, she has learned first hand that many women of African descent wrote poetry, essays, stories, and other eloquent works, that went unpublished, hence, their voices went unheard, and the messages and wisdom these women cared to impart was lost.
Satice James then can only stand up and be a voice for these women.
Being known as an African American writer is not therefore an impediment to her talent, or skill, it is a way for her to gracefully give back to these women.
Women who opened the door for her and allowed her to share her talent for writing.
As you go through this site, remember that Phylis Wheatley was a poetess, and yet died poor and penniless: think about Zora Neale Hurston ~ her prolific novels are well known today, however she too died in the same manner; it wasn't until after her death and many years later that she gained respect and a readership.
Does Satice James, or Satice_j, as she often shortens it, think she is a diva?
Absolutely.
Of course negative connotation has given the word DIVA a bad rap, but Diva's can have GOOD INTENTIONS! Hear some of Satice James' in GOOD INTENTIONS ~ A BLACK GIRL'S PERSPECTIVE ON THINGS IMPORTANT: A Blogger's Look At Humanity, Ethics, As Well As Social Venting & Complimenting!
You'll understand why sharing her voice is so important to Satice_j.
