Cassava Is The Root is an excellent resource for people interested in Africa. It is a personal account of the struggle for power and dignity in solidarity with women’s groups and communities in Mozambique. Anyone working with women in Africa should read this book. This applies to front line workers as well as planners and policy makers whether in the government, with NGOs or international agencies. It gives insight and practical examples of how to work with women and traditional societies. It gives first hand descriptions of how to bring grassroots communities together and connect them with NGOs and government authorities to address the roots of poverty and underdevelopment. The case studies demonstrate experiences with 3 different cultural groups in 3 different regions of Mozambique. The final section of the book is a manual on food processing and preparation in the African context. The detailed recipes will help mothers improve their own nutritional status and contribute to the healthy development of young children. The details on food processing and recipes have also been used by hundreds of women, individually or organized in groups, to add value to their own production and to start income generating businesses. The many photos allow the reader to share in the experiences described by the author and compliment the advice on food processing and recipes. Women in Africa continue to face many obstacles but this book can help anyone gain more insight into these struggles. More importantly the lessons learned can contribute to building the capacity of women and their organizations to improve their status and well-being. Cassava Is the Root author Rodah Namwalizi Lester is an African woman, mother, sister, daughter, farmer, worker, cooperator and activist. She was born in Zambia and has lived in Tanzania, Mozambique and Canada. Rodah believes that all African women need to express themselves – they know what is important for Africa – they know things that men don’t even understand. They need to be given, or take control of a platform to speak on their own. Other people have to stop speaking on behalf of African women and if necessary translators and scribes should capture their true voices. Cassava Is The Root now is available in two editions.
