The Way of Natural Magic is a book meant for Harry Potter fans and people who are simply seeking a fresh perspective on self-development, one that isn't tied to any church, sect, or ideology. We use the metaphors and symbols of the Harry Potter universe to discover that there is an ordinary, natural magic in every life, if we can only learn to attend to our personal, lived experience instead of what a holy book or a sacred institution tells us is real.

Poems of the Universe is a new translation of the Tao Te Ching, dedicated to revealing the truly pragmatic inner direction of Lao Tzu's psycho-spiritual teachings. Poems of the Universe arose in the context of my study of the Chinese oracle, the I Ching (with which Lao Tzu would have been familiar, since it was already a literary classic at the time he lived and wrote). Above all, this translation is meant to serve Lao Tzu's original purpose in writing the Tao Te Ching: the development of a natural society of freethinking, independent individuals-one person at a time.

Life Lessons in a Time of War is a collection of small essays and prose-poems that may serve as inspiration to those involved in the anti-war movement. These lessons are directed toward helping activists to turn within and draw on the unique strength that can be found there. For when the energy within us is clear and strong, our message of non-violence is more clearly heard, and our goal of ending tyranny around the world can be more truly realized.

Drinking From the Darkness is a book about the medieval roots of psychological suffering. Most people assume that the feudal ideas and practices of medievalism are dead, only to be found in obscure history books about European cultures from about a thousand years ago—a time known as “The Dark Ages.” Our sciences, technologies and progressive social reforms in government, education, and economics appear to have left the elitist racism and superstitious belief systems of the medieval era far behind us.

But the Dark Ages are still very much with us. Indeed, they are within us: the beliefs and language that defined the Dark Ages persist today—in the stiffly-worded documents of religion and state; in the fundamentalist strains of certain religious sects (whose adherents proudly claim credit for the results of the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections in America); throughout many of our other cultural institutions, including the mass media; and most ominously, in the ideas we receive into ourselves from those institutions and pass unconsciously onto our children.

This book, then, is a psycho-spiritual guide toward walking through those inner Dark Ages. The purpose of such a journey is to fully explore the ideological roots of the pandemic grip of mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, along with other stress-related illnesses such as ulcers, heart disease, and substance abuse disorders.

The approach I offer in this book is for you to turn within and discover how the Dark Age beliefs, assumptions, half-truths, and prejudices have become trapped in your body cells and your psyche-the sense of self that you feel in every moment but may seldom examine. It has been my experience, and that of my clients in counseling, that such an examination is the leading element in a total approach to enduring personal healing.
