At the time of their formation Maryhill was a village on the outskirts of the city. Maryhill are classed as a ‘Junior’ club, this is not a reference to the age of the players as the majority are semi-professional. In the late 19th century Maryhill FC had a few years as a ‘Senior’ club playing against the likes of Rangers, Queens Park, Partick Thistle etc. During its time the club has had many famous players including Tommy Burns, Danny McGrain, Paul Wilson and Jim Casey (all Celtic), David Meiklejohn who features in the Glasgow Rangers ‘Hall of Fame’, Aberdeen legend Donald Coleman and Jimmy Spiers who captained and scored the only goal when Bradford City won the FA cup for the only time in their history.
