Running Without Scissors (Drop-Stitch Fingerless Mitts)
When I ran across an 1890’s pattern for women’s fingerless mitts, knitted flat and
in one piece, I had to give them a try. Living in a tropical climate, I wasn’t going to
get much use out of them myself, so I took the basic construction from the
vintage pattern and updated it with a super stretchy cotton/elastic blend yarn and
a deconstructed, laddered look, using a drop-stitch pattern as well as dropping
stitches to create the runs. These are quick to knit and stretch to fit almost any
hand, and you can get two pairs from a single ball of yarn. I did them in black to
show off the stitch pattern, and the mitts look fantastic in white and bright colors.
If you aren’t into that look, there’s a plain version that looks like mesh.
