From June 2004 to January 2008 I was fortunate to be part of the Thomas Cox Architects (TCA) Team. Two days a week I would wander into the TCA office in Newport Beach and ask David Smith, the Director of Design, for an assignment. On many occasions I would have several to complete that day. Some of the designs were developed fully with details and building colors while others were no more that a verbal description and a hand gesture describing a volume of space. With this information I would construct a three-dimensional image of the proposed structure in a few hours and present my drawing to the TCA team. During these 44 months I created 426 drawings with a selection of 328 presented for this book. Jeffrey Crussell

The DIRECTIONS project is an exhibition curated by Jeffrey Crussell, which includes a group of 11 artists interpreting 55 specific directions in order to produce individual works of art at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana, California in August 2009. Each artist has worked in a vacuum absorbing and interpreting the DIRECTIONS in order to produce their final piece. They were asked not to discuss the project with anyone during the course of the year and each artist’s identity was carefully guarded. On several occasions the artists are asked to incorporate time and date sensitive DIRECTIONS that would assemble them at the same city park or street corner to perform a task of gathering information that would be used in their final piece.

Mission Hospital and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art have partnered to debut a unique exhibition exploring advanced medical imaging through the lens of contemporary artists. In anticipation of Mission Hospitals’s opening of its new patient care tower which will house state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging services, OCCCA artists have created their version of imaging from the early x-ray to new technologies through individual artistic expression.

Cusp (kusp), n. an important moment when a decision is made that will determine future events. This is what an artist experiences each time a work is conceived. Looking though the lens of a camera waiting for that decisive moment or studying a blank canvas seeking a direction, an intersection of line or a concept of color that will move them in a direction of successful creation. Each of our artists have experienced these moments in their careers and have found a process to surpass the daunting task of creation while developing an outstanding body of work for this exhibition. Each artist sees their world in a different way and has discovered methods of expression to ease the burden of creation.
