This is a setting for high voice and harp or piano of the WB Yeats poem of the same name. This was originally written as an A level exemplar, but has turned into quite a nice song. It has Celtic overtones, especially when used with a harp. It should be performed in a simple, direct style for best effect.

A piece for Soprano soloist, SAT School choir and small group. The style is more modern than my usual, and is aimed at rock/blues influenced choirs. This delightful Christmas number was performed at the Deanery High School Carol Service in 2007. The standard is fairly high, especially for the soloist, but manageable by most school choirs.

A song for high voice and piano that portrays the childlike delight of snow. Angels we have heard on high

Many years ago, shepherds tending their flocks in the wintry hills of southern France had a custom of calling to one another on Christmas Eve, each from his own peak, singing "Gloria in excelsis Deo, gloria in excelsis Deo," just as the angels might have first announced the birth of Christ. The traditional tune the shepherds used, probably from a late medieval Latin chorale, is the refrain of "Angels We Have Heard on High." The music for the verse -- probably from the 18th century -- comes from a different source (a popular tune of the time), as does the text itself, a translation of the old French carol "Les Anges dans Nos Campagnes." They were first published together in a carol collection dated 1855. Here is my joyful arrangement of this well known Christmas carol for organ and trumpet. Performers need to be in professional level for good performance. This is an C score.

This is the second movement of my symphonic orchestral work Praha. It takes as its inspiration the lives of the three famous kings of Prague (at least they figure on the Charles Bridge.) Wenceslas is well known and I chose to make some use of Good King Wenceslas within the texture of my music. Vitus is also well known as his dance is a cure for Tarantula bites, or a condition of restless fidgeting. I gave him a capering ungainly melody which is interspersed with references to the great river Vltava. Sigismund/Adalbert reunited Prague and the Czechs at a time of great unrest, though some think he doesn't deserve either his statue or his stature! His music is grand and imposing as regal music ought to be.

A piece of music that came about because of the boredom and frustration with an INSET day which was both patronising and a complete waste of time. I think the music portrays our feelings on that day quite exactly. We wrote it by alternately choosing random notes and rhthyms and equally random time signatures. Surprisingly, it has turned out rather well. Suitable for Grade 6+

COMPOSER: Michael Guy DOWNLOAD: 2 files @ 128Kbps, Digital 44.1 TIME:[2:25, 3:05] MUSIC: Intro.& Alto Flute solo/Opening: "Children of the Dawn Country" I studied orchestration during the 90's while taking care of my elderly parents - I had time but no money - Along with the first Roland Digital workstation I managed to buy, I also bought sound-cards of decent orchestral samples for that era. I wrote this orchestration out on paper and recorded parts into my sequencer. I'm happy with the sound and a more musical way of working than today's computers. This music has a Native American-feeling using original tunes based on Indian songs I used to sing at the piano. I had a book by a Natalie Curtis who in 1910 wrote down some of the songs of the old Indian Chiefs. The opening is the Eastern Tribes or Wabanaki; They called themselves "Children of the Dawn Country" Hear this music in an upcoming Podcast by going to:http://nativeamericansymphony.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Track one of CD:August Ocean Overture. The opening piece is #1-5 of an Ocean Suite. This track segues into Track 2, the Seabreeze theme. It came out of a fabulous live recording session on the night of July 20, 2007 but was all done in one take. For weeks I'd been playing variations on this theme (written July 2006) and another dramatic darker Nature mood was forming on Low Strings; I got mad that so many great takes of the Seabreeze melody had vanished into thin air, and it was time to get operational. The darker intro. came up and I went with it, feeling the mystery of a vast Ocean at night. It rolled over into a Romatic, theme in A minor played in high octaves then crossing hands to do chords. Finally I arrived back on my sweet Seabreeze melody in G. For the rest of the suite, you'll have to check out the CD (This suite gets hotter in tempo on track 3) High bitrate mp3, Time = 5:09 HEAR MORE AT: http://cdbaby.com/cd/michaelguy

The original piano solo, from the opening 2005 session for Michael Guy's CD: "August Ocean Overture" released Dec. 2007. This was the earlier takes on his Digital Grand, which unlike his "SeaBreeze in G" recorded July 2007, was less processed, a little dry. Yet he was in fine, Classical form. Has an improvised, almost "Moonlight Sonata" sound put into modern, jazz idiom. The left hand is serene--basic arpeggio figures over a Majestic, Oceanic melody. It builds intensity to end a piano solo by a master improvisor. Time = 2:50 HEAR MORE AT: http://cdbaby.com/cd/michaelguy

Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Hark the Herald Angels SingHark the Herald Angels Sing (multimedia download)

Download: $1.38

The Christmas Carol “Hark the herald angels sing” was written by Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley founder of the Methodist church, in 1739. First off the carol was sung with another tune but when Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) composed a cantata in 1840 to commemorate Johann Gutenberg's invention of the printing press. English musician William H. Cummings adapted Mendelssohn’s music to fit the lyrics of “Hark the herald angels sing” already written by Wesley. And now over 150 years later I decided to compose a new arrangement for this famous tune. I had the carol lyrics very much in mind when I arranged the carol, so it's not bad idea to read along with the music. I hope you enjoy listening!
