In 1982 Curtis J. Phillips arrived in the oilsands capital of the world - the community of Fort McMurray, Alberta - in the role of sports and entertainment reporter (later editor) at the daily newspaper.
The 1990s would find him shifting over to the boob tube as program director for the local television station.
During this period he spearheaded several sporting productions that gained national acclaim.
Then in 2001 it was back to the world of freelance with the summers now spent administrating at the internationally recognized Legion Athletic Camp (www.legionathleticcamp.com); an non-profit multi sport summer camp founded and still under the direction of his father George Phillips.
The volunteer bug always seems to be biting.
Not one to sit on his laurels, Phillips is a founding member or founding father of more than 40 events, organizations, awards etc..
They include the Challenge Cup, 1983 Western Canadian Senior Mens Basketball Championships, Red River Sports Collectors Association, Hoops for Kids, Recognize the Effort, Slam Jam, Kickfest, Alberta Athlete of the Year, Bonnie Ehry Memorial Award, Pacers Track and Field and most recently the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.
As a volunteer he also rejuventated many events and organizations that had gone by the wayside, including Blueberry Festival in 1997 and the Fort McMurray Basketball Association in 2002.
FInding that telethons were a means to promote and raise funds for local charities, as a volunteer he spearheaded more than 20 TV events including YMCA Celebrity Auction, Clint Lodge Telethon, Food-a-thon 1987 etc.
He is also credited with in the late 1970s' coining the term "Texas Hat Trick" for four or more goals scored by a player in a hockey game.
His peers have recognized this commitment to the community and province, with Coach of the Year and Volunteer of the Year and a national "Above and Beyond" recognition but by far the highest tribute was the Father of the Year honour bestowed.
A prolific writer his works have been published in more than 200 periodicals and magazines....ranging from The Amateur Boxer to Windspeaker.
Growing up in Winnipeg Manitoba he reached provincial status in the sports of basketball, soccer, swimming, track and field and volleyball.
