A true story of the life & survival of a Jewish inmate in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary in the 1950s.

"Prison is a horror story, but it is also an education. Serving time with the amalgam of inmates in Lewisburg was more than an education for me. It was a constant exposure to the most diversified elements that an individual can learn from – to learn the worst and to learn the best."

"A smart convict makes no enemies and damn few friends."

"The Jewish group at Lewisburg was, for all practical purposes, an isolated world within a world. In many respects we looked to the history of our people, not only to teach us survival techniques, but to set us an example of how to care for one another, in many ways."

"Because of the starkness of our existence in Lewisburg, the meaning of the Passover dinner and Seder became very, very important. It represented everything that we did not have in Lewisburg."

Code Name "Dung"

This chapter of Lewisburg 19370 REALLY should be a movie.

Synopsis: The Jews of Lewisburg hatched a plot against convicted Nazi Doug Chandler, a teacher in Lewisburg's education department, who regularly made life miserable for them. He told people to call him "Doug," but the Jewish inmates called him "dung." The idea was to convince Chandler that one of the Jewish inmates - Mike Sandor, a decorated hero who had served in the French Foreign Legion - was in fact a professional hit man sent to Lewisburg by an Israeli terrorist organization for the express purpose of murdering Chandler. A very persuasive set of documents was forged to prove this, & over a period of months, a plot with many intrigues, twists & turns was carefully executed for the purpose of driving the Nazi to madness.
