Dafydd Bullock was born in 1953 in Llanberis, Gwynedd, Cymru (Wales). A composer, conductor, arranger and teacher, he graduated in Music (University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, 1971 - 1976, with Maestro George Hadjinikos) and took a Master’s Degree in International Relations (University of Sussex, 1981 - 1983). In 1993 and 1994 he won first prizes at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, and in 1995 he was honoured in Wales by admission to the highest Order of the Gorsedd of Bards. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2005.
His compositions include eight symphonies, a cycle of six symphonic poems, two operas, a Requiem, two Mass settings, a Missa Brevis, an oratorio, eleven string quartets and other chamber music and many songs and pieces for piano. He has written scores for two films.
Works have been published in the British Isles by Cwmni Gwynn, Curiad and Bardic Edition, in Belgium by Alain Van Kerckhoven Editeur, in Luxembourg by Music Enterprise and Double You and by Lyon and Healy West in Utah and Crane Music in California, USA. He has made twenty-two CDs to date, with SAIN (Wales), AVK (Belgium) and LakeSound. His music has been performed and broadcast in many countries, including Japan, China, Brazil and Colombia as well as widely within Europe.
Dafydd Bullock has a particular relationship with Prague: his Second Symphony was given its world premiere by Musici de Praga during the 1996 Prague Spring Festival and the Third Symphony, again in Prague, on St. Valentine’s Day, 1997. The third and fourth String Quartets were also recorded in Prague (Becher Quartet) as were the complete works for Cello and Piano (Jindrich Ptacek) and five Trios. More recently, Virtuosi de Basso, the twelve solo celli of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra have recorded and performed music especially written for them.

Gwenllian was the last Welsh Princess of Wales. She died tragically in English captivity after the English conquest in 1282. The music reflects this theme of an unnecessarily wasted life. The central section introduces the beautiful Welsh folksong: Merch Ifanc – a young girl in the morning, married at noon, a widow by nightfall – time passes, opportunities and potential are lost, it could and should have been different … Duration: about 9 minutes. This very black and meditative music was written for Virtuosi di Basso, the cello and bass section of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, in Wales in November 2004, just after the premiere of my first piece for this ensemble 'Gwenllian'. I returned from Prague with the sounds of their performance still in my head, and on a dark November late afternoon, the day known as 'All Souls' or 'Halloween' I managed to produce this music, which tries to evoke light from a starting point of darkness and contemplation. In a way, different qualities of 'spirits' or 'shadow' appear and reappear, sometimes substantial, sometimes rushing by, sometimes warm and lyrical, sometimes cold and sad. In a state of incandescent stress, still in hat and coat, I sat at the piano and hammered out a piece of music. The result was ... the Prague Serenade, perhaps the happiest and most felicitous music I have ever written. Certainly not what I expected. The music is a homage to Prague, to Dvorak (outer sections) and to the Janacek of Jenufa (central part). Perhaps I should lose my luggage more often ... (it did turn up eventually!)

Based on a legend from Lleyn: Meinir hides in a hollow tree to avoid being carried to church on her wedding day (tradition!): trapped, she dies. Years later the tree is struck by lightning and her skeleton falls to the ground in front of her by now totally deranged bridegroom. Strong stuff! Are Pagan and Christian stories of rebirth linked by the symbolism of the Green Man, a mystical figure with green shoots springing from his mouth who is found in the decoration of many English parish churches? Was he merely accommodated by the new religion, like many pagan symbols, or does he show that there is one resurrection myth, expressed in different ways for different times?
