Er war von 1998 bis 2005 Bundesminister des Auswärtigen und Vizekanzler der Bundesrepublik Deutschland und vom 1. Januar 1999 bis zum 30. Juni 1999 Präsident des Rats der Europäischen Union. Nach der Bundestagswahl 2005 zog sich Fischer aus der Politik zurück.
