Executive Summary of Remaking Hazelwood, Remaking Pittsburgh: Urban Design Recommendations for Pittsburgh’s Next Big Urban Project, a guiding document whose aim is to promote a comprehensive and sustainable urban design-based approach to the revitalization of Hazelwood through the redevelopment of the 178-acre ALMONO site. The recommendations are the result of a two-year investigation by Carnegie Mellon University’s Remaking Cities Institute (RCI) into the history, conditions and future of Hazelwood, a once thriving but still promising neighborhood located along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh’s southeast end. The urban design recommendations incorporate ideas produced by students from Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Architecture, particularly those in the fifth-year Urban Laboratory: Community and Urban Design Studio.

Remaking Hazelwood, Remaking Pittsburgh: A Background Study is the Remaking Cities Institute's first installment in the Remaking Hazelwood series. In 2006, the RCI was funded by The Heinz Endowments to convene, host and facilitate the interaction of a select group of technology visionaries to think about the future of the Pittsburgh region, and to put at their service the RCI's expertise in urban design and community development. This project looks at the history and development potential of the former LTV coke works site, Pittsburgh's largest remaining riverfront brownfield parcel.
