The Kingdom of Malinas

The Kingdom of MalinasThe Kingdom of Malinas (book)

Print: $11.15

A young adult fantasy tale. A review by Joleen Kuyper, Creative writing facilitator and WriteRight forum administrator: A really great read: gripping story which I stayed up too late reading, set in a very imaginative and exciting world created by the author, with well developed characters. It may be young adult fiction, technically, but the quality of the writing means there is plenty in it for adult readers as well. At times it's a thrilling page turner but the action never takes away from the marvellous sense of the inner workings of the characters that the author gives us. Also, it's great to see not just a female lead character but also many other women participating in vital elements of the story rather than just acting as window dressing, as unfortunately often happens in fantasy novels. The characters therefore are better role models for teenage girls than most characters in popular fiction today. Can't wait for the sequel to see what Sorrel does next! Brilliant read.

A young adult fantasy tale. After an argument with her mother, Sorrel returns to her home in the Vale of Malinas to find the forest burned and her people taken into slavery.
