A Passion for Recording
My Grandmother told me the story of how she took care of me for a few days when I was just weeks old. I'd cry for whatever reasons would make a baby would cry. She'd try changing me, giving me a bottle, rocking me, whatever. None of that worked. The only time I'd stop crying was when a commercial jet would fly over the house.
See back then, my Grandparents lived very close to Tampa International Airport - and right under the flightpath. So, I was treated to healthy doses of 707's, 727's, DC-8's and 9's. The stuff that was routinely flown in the late 1960's.
As a young child, I lived on Davis Islands, right under the flight path of MacDill Air Force Base. Every day, I was treated to the sights and sounds of F-4 Phantoms. That and our frequent Summer thunderstorms. Oh, and when I was about 6, a small tornado passed over our house. The daytime sky went pitch-black, and yes, that tornado sounded just like a huge freight train.
I would also mess around with cassette recorders. Record voices and random sounds. Though it made me uncomfortable hearing my own voice on playback. But, when the batteries wore down and the tape would slow, then every thing it played back took on a different and to me a wonderful character. My first experiences with sound design. So, sound has had a special impact on me since right around the time I was born!
Am I surprised that I get such a huge thrill from recording a screaming F-18 flyover? Or a lightning strike from less than 30 feet? Or a tranquil waterfall. Or cicadas? Or in creating a new synthesizer in Reaktor? Not at all - it's in every fiber of my DNA!
