Teoksen päähenkilöinä ovat Keuruun kirkkoherran pojat Miihkali ja Yrjö Härkman, jotka sota Venäjää vastaan tempaisee mukaansa, Miihkalin vaimo Elina ja Karjalasta kotoisin oleva Alli. Härkmanin pojat perustuvat historiallisesti todellisiin papin poikiin Gabriel, Juhana ja Kustaa Herpmaniin, jotka puolustivat kotiseutuaan venäläisiä vastaan vuosina 1714–15.
Härkmannin Pojat kuvaa Ruotsin armeijan ylipäällikköä Lybeckerin varsin kriittisessä valossa, kun tämä on kiinnostuneempi lemmikkiporsaastaan kuin armeijan johtamisesta. Teoksessa sankariksi nostetaan sen sijaan kenraalimajuri Armfelt, joka on kuitenkin voimaton esimiehensä ponnettomuuden edessä. Ruotsille tappiollinen sota pyritään kääntämään Suomen itsenäisyyden voitoksi. Esimerkiksi Topeliuksen teoksiin verrattuna Elfving esittää ruotsalaiset kielteisemmässä valossa.
