Sydney Around and About

Sydney Around and AboutSydney Around and About (book)

Here are eighteen short stories set in and around Sydney. We invite you to take a peek at the foibles of human nature through this window of words. The parade of characters passing across these pages includes wives and lovers gone wrong; neatly dressed desperadoes; kooks, cranks and obsessives; healers with hearts of gold; and just normal everyday men and women trying to get on with their lives. The stories all come from the early 90s when the author, under the tutelage of the Sydney Fellowship of Australian Writers, was working hard on plotting and characterisation for short story writing. Fired with a well-grounded imagination, the stories are often rough, quirky, and perhaps a little nutty, but they are a very satisfying read with more than enough surprises to arouse your inner chuckle.

Presented due to popular demand, “Tales of the Bear, The Dragon and Other Wondrous Creatures” is a collection of travel newsletters written by Australian Patrick McGowan from 1998 to 2006. During these years he worked in Russia and China and seized the opportunity to visit many places far from home. Here is a sometimes whimsical but always informative account of some of the favourite places he has lived and visited. This includes his series on the five sacred Taoist mountains of China (Wu Yue). While the focus is on travel in Russia and China, there are tales of visits to many European destinations, Africa, and even a few Australian destinations such as Kakadu National Park and Lightning Ridge.

Enclosed is a record of my travel to the five sacred taoist mountains of china during the years 2005-2006. The chapters originally began as newsletters written soon after I returned from each trip. I have now compiled them into one easy to read format. Previously I had the individual newsletters on esnips and got 100s of hits so now I am happy to share them here.

    Environmental Thrillers on the Rise!

New teen adventure novel explores theme of storm water pollution

Sydney NSW Writer Patrick McGowan has just release his first full length work of fiction, a teen adventure story called The Drain Brains. It is about a gang of suburban youth who explore untold kilometres of the “darkies” under their town. The story was inspired by a real such gang.

Patrick wrote the book ten years ago. At that time it was rejected by a publisher who admitted they were only seeking to publish a book which could win the children’s book of the year. Then Patrick got busy travelling and working overseas and left the book in a box under his house. Since that time, there has been a surge of teenage interest in fiction; and the whole subject of environmentalism has skyrocketed. After Patrick got home from his travels, he dusted off the manuscript and saw that the book has found its right time for publication.

Exploring storm water drains is extremely dangerous and not to be encouraged. However the fact is the book was inspired by a newsletter provided by a real gang who walk the drains in Melbourne. The author found the information taped to a telegraph pole in the centre of Sydney in the early nineties. This gang, back then called the Cave Clan, has its own website (www.caveclan.org) which carries more stern warnings of walking the drains than any official website.

Jean Walhborg, editorial co-ordinator of Dorrance commented on this book: “Composed in captivating narrative and compelling dialogue, the story flows at a brisk tempo. The plot contains more than a few strategically placed, unexpected twists that should maintain the reader's interest throughout. The characters are developed and presented in a multi-dimensional fashion revealing the intricacies of their unique personalities and individual agendas. In addition, Mr. McGowan effectively manages to avoid artificially padding the work with superfluous material and unnecessary characters…………..”

Patrick is now busy preparing to publish a collection of his writings on his travels to Russia and China and other locations over the past eight years.
