Developing a Master Student Program is a professional development, turn-key training opportunity designed specifically for the staff and faculty of GEAR UP Programs.
This Program helps to support and sustain Gear Up programs to meet the needs of the highest at risk population of students needing services. There are curriculum resources available that serve as guides for facilitators and have been tailored to meet the needs of middle and high school students transitioning into college.
Additional Professional Development and technical assistance is also available upon request for all qualifying Gear Up Sites and is fee based. The DMS Program is a collaboration with the New York State Education Department, Bank Street College of Education, and HESC.

Parents Provide Roots and Wings Middle School Curriculum
Parents Provide Roots and Wings is the GEAR UP parenting program focused on the year of transition from high school to college. The main goal of this parenting program is to assist parents to make that difficult transition as painless as possible. Within our overarching goal ,we hope to have parents accomplish the following:
Share information and ideas on the college parenting process
Understand their children/understand themselves during this transition
Learn about adolescent development
Visit a college and get ideas on what to look for and how to choose
Coping with separation
Learn to care for themselves during this transition
We hope to guide parents through a variety of activities wherein they will reflect, problem solve, role play, and share ideas and strategies which will make this transition in an informed manner

Nuts and Bolts The Tools to Succeed in College
The aim of Nuts and Bolts is to launch high school students into the world of college writing and responsibilities. Students will study the kinds of thinking required to be successful writers, readers, and class participants. The foundational skills of grammer, logic, and rhetoric will be taught to students both in preparation for college-level dialogue and as vehicles for students to assess their academic abilities and to develop meta-cognitive strategies to become better students.

Transitions A High School and College Preparatory Curriculum for Middle School Students
Transitions A High School and College Preparatory Curriculum for Middle School Students, acknowledges the importance of the academic, social and emotional attainment necessary for participants’ readiness for the college environment. Through a series of workshops that address relevant topics/issues, we will focus on the issues surrounding the preparation process for junior high students. Students will leave this course armed with the tools necessary to become competent, self-aware individuals and stronger students with the ability to understand themselves and the high school and college environments.
The curriculum was designed for a wide range of groups and sites so that they can adapt it to their respective and individual needs.

Transitions A College Preparatory Curriculum
Transitions A College Preparatory Curriculum, acknowledges the importance of the academic, social and emotional attainment necessary for participants’ transition to the college environment. Through a series of workshops that address relevant topics/issues, Transitions focuses on the issues surrounding the change and separation process that students are expected to experience. Students will leave this course armed with tools necessary to become competent self-aware individuals and stronger students with the ability to navigate the college environment and the skills to integrate into college environment.
