Hal Wiggins presently works as an environmental scientist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He has manned a field office in central Virginia for over eighteen years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at Old Dominion University and has won several awards and commendations for his outstanding work in the field of conservation as well as for his diplomatic skills in working with the public. Hal has worked to save thousands of acres of wetlands and historic properties in the Fredericksburg area and was instrumental in the removal of the Embrey Dam. He is a co-founder of the Fredericksburg Chapter of the Virginia Native Plant Society and is an experienced botanist. He served for four years as a medic in the Army and has worked as a wetlands consultant for an engineering and environmental testing firm. The vision found in his books and art is sincerely inspired by Mother Nature herself.
Hal was born in Anchorage, Alaska. As a member of a military family he also lived in El Paso, Texas and the Panama Canal Zone. When he was twelve, his family moved to Virginia where he has resided ever since. Hal has traveled all over the world, including three tours of India and two of Europe. He has hitchhiked across America twelve times and paddled twice across the Okeefenokee Swamp in a canoe. Hal is also an artist who works in ceramic glazes, wood carving, and oil portraits.
Hal’s three previous books are Virginia Native Plants Black Cat Press 2005; A Tale of Two Dams, from Salem Church Dam to the Embrey Dam Black Cat Press, 2006, and A Field Guide to Crow’s Nest Black Cat Press 2008.
Hal currently resides in Fredericksburg, Virginia with his wife, Jodie.
