Download: $2.50 This essay describes a way of finding hypercomplex numbers—ones that extend complex numbers to more dimensions—with only basic algebra plus Ayn Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism. The result has implications for mathematics and the philosophy of science. The “RADN numbers” (known by science under another name) have a property of rotation like complex numbers, and are also commutative/distributive. (Division is deemed less crucial.) The author asked himself what exactly numbers are, how they arise in our mind, and what their relation to reality is. But these questions were so fruitful only because he used a correct philosophy. Another philosophy, such as Karl Popper’s, would not have worked. This has two implications: Rand’s philosophy has epistemological truth; and the RADN numbers may have unique significance. May spur thought on mathematics, addition, multiplication, dimensions, imaginary units, and dimensioned numbers, and lead to more appreciation of Rand’s ideas.

Download: $6.25 Begins with a quiet melody that soon becomes expansive and grand. Next comes a contemplative tune, in the homonymous minor key, that ends on the relative major. However, a short transitional phrase leads back to the original key to introduce a rhythmic, jaunty tune, after which the contemplative minor melody returns. Finally, the jaunty melody recurs and is repeated, with a fermata on the second-last note, leading into the first, expansive melody once more, which ends the piece.
Playable by high school or college band. Level 3. Ninety-two measures long. In case the band has no oboe, an alternative first flute part is provided. Cues for other missing instruments are provided throughout. The full score is 11 x 17, but it may be printed out on 8-1/2 x 11 sheets if desired.
