About the Author...

John Butterfield is a church Minister in Scotland. In his free time he paints (in the summer) and writes (in the winter). With a wife, two teenage children, an elderly enterprise sailing dinghy, a large garden and two dogs his free time is very limited. The books listed on this page have been written over the last ten years and are offered here after sitting unappreciated on his hard drive. At present he is working on a new novel and book on spirituality and wholeness. John is vice-chairman of Central Arts - an organisation for artists and creative people in Central Scotland.

Faith Seeking Understanding: A Confident Journey

Faith Seeking Understanding: A Confident JourneyFaith Seeking Understanding: A Confident Journey (book)

This book shows how the pilgrimage of faith exploration is a confident journey that involves intellectual freedom, a prophetic passion for justice and peace, and a deep spirituality. Christian confidence is about knowing what you believe and integrating that belief into your whole life. For conservative Christians confidence involves the assurance of arrival at a destination. For me the journey of faith itself is as important as the eventual end. That journey of faith is a constant search for understanding as we are continually confronted with the mystery of God. The book also contains four creeds written by contemporary church groups as they struggled to articulate their faith in a meaningful way. The title "Faith Seeking Understanding" (fides quaerens intellectum) is a phrase coined by Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury over 1000 years ago.

On the Capcir Plateau in the mountains of the French Pyrénées the past and the present intermingle in a story of love and persecution. Mary is a historian researching the ancient heretics, the Cathars, and John is a priest reflecting on his vocation. Both have been damaged by experiences in the recent past and are both wary of relationships. Mary's terrifying nightmares confuse her research with past traumatic experiences of her own. The plot moves through the minefields of domestic violence, the boundaries of celibacy and mental illness. New age hippie travellers and local characters become involved as the story develops into a modern day battle for the soul of the mountains. Through their experiences together John and Mary have to come to terms with the events that have sent them to this remote area of the south of France. John Butterfield's novel brings together insights from psychology, history, mysticism and theology in a modern love story.

All Christian Theology can be Green

All Christian Theology can be GreenAll Christian Theology can be Green (book)

Over the last thirty years Christian theologians from many different traditions have written about the relationship of God, people and planet in the light of the major environmental issues facing the earth. This detailed academic study looks at five contrasting theological positions to see how they approach the environment and concludes that all theology can be green. This is an important conclusion because it gives the underpinning for Christians to be at the forefront of the environmental movement rather than being linked to those who are destroying God's creation through selfishness and greed.

A collection of thirty eight poems and meditations written over the last thirty years and covering many different themes - some are Christian, some are funny and some are just weird. Many are suitable for reading out loud but some are for quiet reading alone. Some rhyme and others don't - but hey lets not make a big thing about that. Some explore the deeper meanings of life and faith and the honest struggle with doubts and others are just a bit of fun. Enjoy.
