A History of Greatham

A History of GreathamA History of Greatham (book)

Print: $22.25

The present-day Parish of Greatham lies in the county of Hampshire, on either side of the old Farnham (Surrey) to Petersfield Turnpike. The ‘Domesday Book’ of 1086 recorded Greatham as being ‘Terra Regis’, a Latin term meaning ‘Land of the King’, indicating that this was once a Royal manor belonging to William the Conqueror himself. In later years, the manor passed through many families by marriage and by purchase, including the Devenish, Marshall, Norton, Freeland, Love, Chawner and Coryton families. The name of the village has changed many times, however slightly, over the years. Greteham, Grietham, Gretham, Grutham, Gratham all derived from two separate words, the ‘Old-English’ (Anglo-Saxon) ‘ham’, meaning ‘village, estate, manor or homestead’ and an old Scandinavian word ‘griot’ or ‘gryt’, meaning ‘stones or stony ground’. Thus the name ‘Greotham’ came into being, literally a ‘stony estate’ or ‘farm on gravel’.

This is a sequel to Peter Griptons original ‘A History of Greatham’ published in late 2003. Since then many people far and wide have sent Peter further contributions, ones that they said they were quite happy to share with local inhabitants. The articles and stories in’ Greatham Memories cannot in any way be described as ‘A History of Greatham Part 2’, but the author hopes that readers will enjoy them just the same.

Korea 1950-53 Recounting REME Involvement

Korea 1950-53 Recounting REME InvolvementKorea 1950-53 Recounting REME Involvement (book)

Hardcover Print: $35.01

The story of the War in Korea and of the part played by the REME from 1950 to 1953 as told by various individuals of that Corps, makes fascinating reading. The support and devotion to their colleagues is most apparent, but typical of the British soldier, these experiences are balanced with a sense of sympathy for the unfortunate Korean civilian population caught up in the conflict, and it wouldn't be a true story of the British soldier without its sprinkling of 'squaddie' humour. John Dutton has provided an excellent compilation of personal accounts in this comprehensive story of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers at war where the positioning of Light Aid Detachments and Field Workshops was just as important to senior commanders in their tactical planning as was the medical back-up of a Regimental Aid Post or a Field Ambulance.

A collection of verses recounting the lives of Army Apprentices at Arborfield. The Army Apprentices School at Arborfield was originally designed to house and train up to 1,000 apprentices at a time. In the 1990’s the originally buildings had been replaced with those of a more modern construction - but to many old boys they were far more inferior to the original wooden and corrugated iron accommodation spiders and other buildings. In 2004 the Labour government in their wisdom decided that apprentice training at Arborfield would cease completely and so it was that on the 12th August 2004 the last batch of Arborfield Army Apprentices from more than 50,000 before them passed out from the College to move into mans service. For those who started their Army careers as Apprentice Tradesmen Arborfield has always held a special place in their hearts. TeeCee’s collection of amusing and sometimes poignant verses reflects much of the life and attitudes of many who spent their formative years there.
