Colorado Wall Dogs: Ghost Signs Across the State

Colorado Wall Dogs: Ghost Signs Across the StateColorado Wall Dogs: Ghost Signs Across the State (book)

Print: $32.96

Colorado Wall Dogs showcases 54 photographs of vintage advertising signs called “ghost signs” that were painted on brick buildings from around 1880 to 1940. This book is Laura’s effort to preserve and catalog this important part of Roadside Americana. While searching out and photographing these hand-painted signs Laura nicknamed the signs “wall dogs” in homage to the itinerant men who painted them. Her three-year effort to photograph ghost signs all over the state of Colorado was an incredible exploration of our graphic and architectural history. Maternal Legends, a juried exhibition of contemporary artist books, was exhibited at 23 Sandy Gallery December 5, 2008 through January 3, 2009. Mothers, grandmothers, sisters, stories, histories, legends, legacies. What did we learn from our mothers and their mothers and their mothers? What are the stories that have been passed down through the generations? How did the women in our family shape who we are today? Artists around the world were inspired to explore and celebrate our Maternal Legends through the magic of artist books. This exhibit was juried by Cara List, the Art and Art History Librarian at the University of Oregon’s Architecture and Allied Arts Library. This exhibition catalog showcases those artists included in the exhibit with full color photos of each work as well as artist statements for each work. A wonderful celebration of the book arts.

Urban Decay

Urban DecayUrban Decay (book)

In Laura Russell’s hometown of Saginaw, Michigan, decades of poverty and the decline of the automotive business are creating an urban blight that is heartbreaking. Lost factory jobs lead to lost homes as families struggle to survive. These homes become bank property then gang territory, then arson targets before finally succumbing to city bulldozers. In this moving, emotional book, photographs of burned out, boarded-up, homes—once proud family homes—are paired with Laura's original poetry about a once-vibrant neighborhood and the decay of the American dream. Urban Decay presents 30 photographs, all taken on one cold morning, in one small neighborhood—an area about seven blocks by three blocks. Two poems, introductory text and a map of the burned out houses accompany the photographs.

Exhibition Catalog
Resurrection explores a renewed interest in antique or alternative photographic processes. Contemporary photographers have developed a new focus on materials and techniques by turning to the history of photography for metaphors, technical information, and visual inspiration. This national juried show showcases a wide array of primitive photographic processes by contemporary artists who are using antiquarian methods in unexpected ways. These artists are working with antique or alternative techniques such as tintypes, daguerreotypes, gum bichromates, emulsion on metals, cyanotypes, collodian prints, toned silver prints, and much more. This show was curated by Laura Moya, who is the director of PhotoLucida.
