Ripe Chokecherry Moon is a love story, between Francois and Merewyn MacKenna that takes place during the Minnesota fur trade era. It is a story of a family connected by murder, revenge, and passion, but mainly this is a story about two people, one a Voyageur and the other a daughter of a famous fur trader, who find love in the Minnesota Wilderness in l805. The story also tells of the trade wars between the rival fur companies of Hudson Bay, North West and American furs, and what it was like to be an Independent trader selling furs between Grand Portage and Fort William. It Includes Indian lore through the eyes of one of the most unique characters in the story, Poor Eyes. Poor Eyes is a wise Ojibwe woman who cooks and travels with the voyageurs, giving her unique and often humorous perspective on life. The action, takes place in the area we now call the voyageur's highway. The characters travel from the earliest settlements in what we now know as Fort Snelling, up rivers and tributaries into Lake Superior and eventually end up at the Great fur rendezvous at Grand Portage and Fort Williams. While the book is fictional in nature, the historical facts have been carefully researched.
