Profesora Algarín, a devoted teacher who enjoys working with children and adults, has had and is having many positive experiences in her classroom with students of different backgrounds as they learn Spanish without a textbook and without a workbook!
When she was a child, she studied in the United States of America during two memorable years-from 2nd semester of 1st grade through 1st semester of 3rd grade. She remembers her school years fondly. In Puerto Rico, she studied under an education system, which is illegal in the USA: the tracking system, which benefits the students who are focused and eager to learn. Although, under the tracking system, the middle school and high school classes were intensive, they were enjoyable and acceptable. School was not taken lightly, for it was a crucial and chief facet of people’s life. At a very early age, her parents, who strongly believed that it was their responsibility, and not the school’s, to educate their children, exposed her to Hebrew, Latin, and Greek... (Later, she studied Latin, Quechua, German, Italian, and French.) Her parents, her most important teachers, were actively involved in her upbringing and provided her with a very rich childhood; however, they never spoiled her. It was almost perfect living among horses, cows, pigs, chicken, rabbit, dogs, and Pepe, the mean black goat, who was the wild pet of the house.
As an adult, after she completed her second college degree, MA, in linguistics at the Universidad de Puerto Rico with a 3.71 average, she studied at Seton Hall University, at University of Central Florida, and at Universidad of Salamanca, where she completed her third college degree, MA, in Spanish culture and language with a 4.00 average. The tracking system had prepared her for her graduate studies, which were very intensive. However, it was during her undergraduate studies that she decided to become a teacher. She was taking a Spanish philology course which impacted her when she learned about the systematic relationship between these sets of letters: p and b, t and d, and k and g, among many other things.
Finally, Miss Algarín enjoy reading and studying her favorite book, the Holy Bible, each day; she also enjoys reading and doing research about linguistics issues, other countries, and other people; she spends time with her beloved family, with whom she travels frequently in the United States and abroad.
