Sometimes I miss the pure self indulgence of prog-rock, its fast licks and swirls and Rick Wakemanish classical orchestration. Well I have, via Jacky, managed to get a quick fix and listen to something new. Thank God there is an alternative to 'Tales From Topographic Oceans'!

Phideaux is a band led by anarchist especially Phideaux Xavier, a highly experienced multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer, born in New York dedicated to not only compose and perform music but also produces other bands that believe in innovation.

This erudite artist with a long career, takes us along, with drummer Richard Hutchins on a mysterious musical journey in the company of other musicians with whom Phideaux has been involved in a musical and experience creating elaborate pieces of music, strong and yet mysteriously with composition melodic, progressive rock sprinkled under a background of subtly inciting mental voyages into the fictional world of sensations, produced by the psyche of the listener.

Thus this particular band invited us to fly and create new links with oneself to make us think when we hear their interpretations progressive psychedelic and Gothic, for the depth of them and so additively fun they can be.

Celloman's Compositional Force - Review

In many ways this music reminds me of KLIMPEREI, a French duo formed around 1985 by Françoise & Christophe Petchanat. Their own website states their music is often described as « toy-music, naïve, acoustic, experimental, minimal, childish, neo-classic, bizarre, avant-garde, lunaire... French toy-pop... boîte à jouets renversée... avan strange toy pop chamber music... ». I do not doubt Celloman's Compositional Force's seriousness but to be mentioned in the same breath as this French couple is praise enough.

This is what he said:

I am a composer. I was brought up in Virginia and planning to pursue a musical degree in the future. I use MIDI and also piano for compositions so far. I have written for piano cello clarinet guitar voice. These are all small scale projects and I'm currently doing collaborations now. One was with Matt Alexander (Psychronic Continuum) and another will be Tena Mosher. Another will be Caroline Moore and another will be Michael David Sherwood. Am hoping for an increase in exposure but before I join anything or start to sell I am hoping to hone my skills at JMU's Composition dept.

'Doppelganger' - Love this. Electronic music has become the 'norm' these days and the tools we all have to hand to assemble this type of music are easily available and the majority of the tools we use are free. There are composers (assemblers) out there who, without a modicum of creativity, manage to manufacture, cut and paste, tracks that are acceptable in a mediocre sort of way. Within these snippets of songs there is a definite craft, with production quality that is of the highest order. This is well worth listening to because it is quite clever in places, witty and intelligent.

This is full of big filmic sounds, fairy tale harps and fat sounds.Tightly controlled reverb that doesn't flood the panorama and subtle beats. Nice bits of guitar every now and then - lay back and drink a gin and tonic or two.

Loved these tracks so much I forgot to get on with my work and found myself in that pleasant state between asleep and awake, nodding my head and tapping my feet. Listen to this stuff if you want to forget the stresses of the day but don't want to listen to those awful relaxation tapes of masturbating whales.

One of the biggest influences on my music was an album released by Virgin Records in the early 1970's called 'The Faust Tapes' by the German band Faust. This masterpiece was retailed in the UK for 49 pence. This album was so important to me it inspired me to record 'Extraction' which was released in 1989 by EETapes of Belgium and remixed and slotted onto our iTune download album 'Cassette Culture 1989 - 2009'

This has come the closest for me to the anarchistic recording style of that album and the track 'Skin' is a masterpiece. The tracks on the player are the kick up the arse I needed and has got me rethinking my position as a recording artist. What more can I say except well done you bastard!

The Dancing Did - Retrospective

There are bands that are inspirational and some that are just totally entertaining. To be able to be either of those things and be unique is very rare. The Dancing Did, through their front man and his incredible articulate, educated lyrics, sang about the countryside around the Vale of Evesham, the plight of its people, the folk lore, the lorry pirates, the gypsies and the day Bo Diddly nearly came to Evesham. Musically they were a - just go and listen I can't explain.

Evesham at the beginning of the 1980's was a hotbed of creative people, with other bands like 'The Photos' and 'And Also The Trees' living within a small radius of The Vauxhall Inn, the favorite watering hole at the time and also the home of Nicola (Baby Go slippers) Mumford - more here.

My affection for 'The Did' is for two reasons, they were fun to be around and they were the reason why 'Finish The Story' formed.

In 2007 Cherry Red released a retrospective of their work which included some live tracks which I by chance recorded at Cheltenham College, I was there to record 'Blurt' and had some tape over so this unique moment was recorded.

- You have had a varied career starting at a very young age. What have been the most rewarding highlights so far?
For me, the work has always been the reward. To actually be able to put so much time and effort into my art is a gift from life I truly cherish. Yes, I struggle financially and my whole existence is dedicated to my career which means very little to no social life. But somehow, as soon as I stop working I get depressed. As if the whole purpose of my existence was to actually promote and create my art, no matter how vain it might sound.

And I fully understand that the fame I have once craved so much and that might always elude me is made up only of tiny glimpses of recognition which in the end, doesn't really define us. But I must say that by starting very young, I was really able to put it all in perspective and never forget that in any career, the ones who succeed are the ones who often have to sacrifice everything to what they believe in. And I'm prepared for that.
- You list a very impressive support team behind you, what are their roles and how important do you think it is to have this support system?
The thing about my organization is that we are mainly 3 members: Me, Calvin and Gabe, my 2 partners. We actually all live in different countries most of the time. Yet with the net now making things so easy and distances a thing of the past, we were able to create a dynamic which fits well.

There are also other people that come and go in the process but somehow, the 3 of us have connected in a way that made an efficient entity. Without them, not much of this would ever be possible. Now that we are not only producing but actually distributing both a movie and album, the level of complexity makes their role invaluable.
- Tell me about the releases you have to date and are there any more planned for the future?
We have released the album Utopia first online in digital form only back in December 2007. But it took a long time in order to create a structure that would allow us to sustain a promotion strategy. I must admit, I was coming from the world of porn where I was an actor since 2000. And so, I had to completely redefine my role and existence while making a bifurcation to music in 2006 when I started to record the album. I hadn't really recorded any vocals before that point.

And all the while, I wanted to start producing and directing my own project which actually became a sort of mix between my music and high tech pornography. Utopia X is now the movie I am releasing officially on the 5th of November exactly 6 years to the day after the theatrical release of The Matrix Revolutions which came out in 2003. The Matrix trilogy had such a profound impact on me that it completely redefined the way I viewed life. And in a way, Utopia X is my own version of The Matrix, with sex, very cheap effects and no money lol

I wanted to create a new kind of pornography where images would come at a very fast pace being relentless in their motion. The movie is available for any public display with no restrictions and will be distributed progressively in many dance and sex clubs. We also plan to release Utopia on CD in 2010 with a bonus Disc along with a video compilation on DVD featuring new music videos including many from my next album called Mister E.

I'm still working on recording this last outing and it should become available hopefully sometime in 2010 in digital form at first and then on CD subsequently. Being an independent artist often means that our albums are progressively being heard because we don't have a massive push from the big labels which makes it possible for an established artist to be seen simultaneously throughout a large array of venues. As an indie, I got used to working from the ground up for any new production.
- How would you describe your music and who has inspired you?
I admit I was baffled at first when I was asked to describe my own music. The best definition I came up with is electronic dance music with a pop edge. It's quite a bit experimental and can even be eclectic. What happened is that I met 2 music composers who had tons of musical compositions without vocals or structures that could be as long as 10 minutes and more.

I listened to a huge amount of material and picked parts of certain tracks which I thought could become songs and started to write words and melodies. And I was really careful to adhere to a certain pop structure even if the original music wasn't necessarily created to accomodate a pop song per say. And once I was faced with the results, I had a hard time describing it even to myself.

I tend to have a schizophrenic way of writing songs, very charged and dense vocally which I have to refine a bit by substracting elements. And even if there is a ton of artists who have truly inspired me, The Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran and Erasure are most likely the ones who have truly changed my vision on life and permanently permeated anything I can create in the future.
- You have commented on our pixelated existence on the web, how important is the Internet for delivering your music?
The net is extremely important because it really gives many the chance to forge a career in the world of music even now that the existing structures are crumbling. There are a lot more music hopefuls now then there were even 10 years ago. And the net is responsible for that in a big way as it gave tools to create art to anyone willing enough to do the work and pursue their dream. And Utopia for me is the perfect metaphor for the net because in a way, everyone is becoming an image now and we are used to dealing with virtualized version of people and events which in a way, is all an illusion artificially created by mankind.

- How would you describe your music and what has been your biggest influence?
I guess our music is kind of Space Rock, kind of Psych- Rock and definitely a little bit Alt- Rock (we grew up with Nirvana, after all)... we discovered the genre of shoegazing after we already were kind of doing the wall of sound thing, but I know some people have described us as that, so maybe. I guess our biggest influences were having Pink Floyd played in the car during long night drives as a child (sounds lame, but it's true), and the bands we played in before this one. We come from a metal town, so one day I just bought a delay pedal and we started doing our own thing instead. I think the first Secret Machines album was the catalyst for that, but it was a while ago!
- In which direction do you think your music will develop?
I don't know, really. Either probably one of three ways: more progressive rock, more alternative rock or more electronic. As a band, we love to play fast and loud, but Alt rock has its limitations, and as we become better musicians we can play more progressive stuff. Also with modern progressive rock you have the option to do some quite electronic material, so you can face the future of music a bit more confidently.
- How important is the Manchester scene for your music?
The Manchester scene is key. We played a lot underage back home, but that scene, whilst vibrant always had us as the outsiders. After a show once, a guy from one of the other bands asked us if we'd heard of Amplifier or Oceansize (both Manchester bands), and to check them out. I think he was generous for the comparison, as they are a lot better than us, but I also think this is the only real scene in the UK you can get away with playing this kind of music and make a name for yourself.
- Have you any releases coming out soon?
We're working on a second self-released single, as well as mixing some tracks we recorded over the summer. Some of the summer tracks are very trippy- they'll make your head spin! Unfortunately, they are quite long so we're probably going to wait to release them on an EP, whereas we have a more fast-paced song in mind for the next single and we have a B-side already recorded, so one step at a time.
- How important is playing live to you?
Playing live is our biggest reason for getting into music. At the end of the day, records are great to listen to; they give a sense of personal connection with the music, but live it's something completely different, something shared and more powerful. It's also fun to defy people's expectations- they assume we won't be lively on stage, but since our background is alt-rock we throw ourselves around a lot; we certainly don't take ourselves too seriously.

In December 2008 Electro Arc label release ‘Where Is My Jesus’ on their Net.Ware Stimulation compilation CD. In January 2009 ‘Cassette Culture 1989 – 2009’ was released as a commercial download. This project contained remixes of a series of demo recordings made in 2008 and a section of the live Plac.Art.X set that was streamed over the Internet to Regensburg Germany in August 2007. This release also contains a complete remixed version of 'Extraction' which was originally released in 1989. These remixes were by Jake Bright.

Below are the recording notes of Jude the Obscure written in 1989:

"Jude the Obscure" was released in May 1989 and is the second solo release by T/W on M4TR and is seen as a natural progression from the first tape 'Hope’. The recording style is more experimental e.g., the use of different speeds, machines, tape types with and without noise reduction, the use of microphones - at one point the whole house became the studio, the bathroom the live room, the bedroom the dead room, etc. The use of instruments on JTO creates a bizarre effect, one minute a crazy AXEMAN guitar will disappear into a didgeridoo droning underneath a flute and eastern drum and the next a floating female vocal will be echoed by a telephone answer machine.
