Mark Hazard Osmun began his writing career as a journalist in 1971, writing features for a weekly newspaper in Virginia, then covering sports for a daily paper in Colorado. He returned to college in 1973 and studied creative writing and English at George Mason University in Virginia, graduating cum laude in English in 1975. He moved to Honolulu where he became a sports writer for The Honolulu Advertiser newspaper. In 1978, after covering the growing interest in long-distance running, Mark left the paper to write a book on running. Harper & Row imprint J.B. Lippincott published his non-fiction, "new journalism” view of marathon running in 1979 (THE HONOLULU MARATHON). Mark moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where he became a freelance writer. He worked as a foreign correspondent and travel writer for The San Francisco Examiner and became a west coast correspondent for USA Today. He contributed features to publications such as Rolling Stone, Playboy, The Boston Globe, The Orange County Register, The Dallas Morning News, Sacramento Magazine, Honolulu Magazine, The Yacht Magazine, and The Runner Magazine. His six-part series for The San Francisco Examiner on South African apartheid became a finalist in the 1987 H.L. Mencken Awards of the Free Press Association. His writing has taken him to such places as Alaska, Scotland, Grenada, Costa Rica, Hawaii, South Africa, and throughout the United States. MARLEY’S GHOST, his first novel, was released nationally by Twelfth Night Press in September 2000. Featured by the Associated Press in a major holiday story and receiving wide reviewer praise, the novel climbed to 126th position on Amazon.com's sales list during the last week of December. Mark moved to Sonoma County California where he served the American Red Cross as its Public Affairs Director for three years. In his spare time he researched his next novel. In 2004, Mark and his wife returned to Honolulu, closing the circle on his travels. He wrote After the Bones from his home in Honolulu. After the Bones. Honolulu. 1866. Paradise teeters on the verge of great change as world powers vie for strategic dominance in Hawai`i. Rogue agents, working within the British Consulate, initiate a conspiracy involving murder and deception to draw Great Britain into a forceful coup of the Hawaiian monarchy. Enter the menacing British assassin, Mr. Brown; two fugitives, Mac Ducain and Delaware Flinn; young American reporter, Mark Twain; and the venerated, old priestess, `Ike Kiwalao—all of whom become players in the intricate schemes threatening the island nation. But every plan is subject to mana—the mystical, spirit-power residing in the bones of the dead—and mana itself will determine the outcome.

The Honolulu Marathon

The Honolulu MarathonThe Honolulu Marathon (book)

Print: $17.94

The Honolulu Marathon. The third-largest marathon in the world. Over 30,000 runners in a single year. Over $100,000 paid to leading racers. But it didn't start out that way. In The Honolulu Marathon, Mark Hazard Osmun, recounts the origins of this amazing event and the motivations of the people who made it happen. From recording the promotional showmanship of the zealous Dr. Jack Scaff, to kidnapping world-class runners, to running in the race itself, Osmun became the principal chronicler of the marathon--an event that became the bellwether for the nation's subsequent "Running Boom." Originally published in 1979, and told in a fast-paced, engaging, and sometimes irreverent style, The Honolulu Marathon placed the event on the international stage and now gives us perspective on the colossus it has become. Now with new material, an author preface, and an annually updated Race Statistics section, The Honolulu Marathon is a must-read for everyone who has--or will--run the race.

Marley's Ghost

Marley's GhostMarley's Ghost (book)

Print: $16.92

Before Scrooge, before Dickens, there was Jacob Marley. In Charles Dickens’s classic, A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge owes his salvation to one man: his former partner, the late Jacob Marley. Yet despite Marley’s crucial role we know him only as a shadow. Until now. Fugitive, prodigy, gambler, miner, corruptor and partner of Scrooge, Jacob Marley suffers a life in which he is both victim and villain, noble and vile. After his death, Marley’s ghost wanders a frozen hell seeking answers and redemption. There he plays one last role: that of a pawn in the battle between Light and Dark. Ultimately, Marley must choose between God and the Devil, between sacrifice and betrayal, as Mankind’s future hangs in the balance. Marley's Ghost, a dark tale about the winter of the soul, shines a brilliant, new light on Dickens’s immortal story. Now, for the first time, includes Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Prequel and Original in one!
