Maxfield
This page is devoted to hosting various recordings and movies I have made. Mostly it is home to my numerous Album-A-Day's, which are works of at least 20 minutes in length that must be both written and recorded within a single 24-hour period (see crapart.spacebar.org/aad). Also be sure to check out my Myspace page and my hip-hop production team, Ghost Notes. Enjoy!

AAD12: Restless
This, my twelfth Album-A-Day (see crapart.spacebar.org/aad) was written and recorded within 18 hours on 8/24/05. I usually like to have at least a loose concept throughout an AAD but this one is much more conceptual than most of my others. I wanted to have the structure and content of this album reflect a night's worth of dreaming so for the most part, the songs all transition into one another seamlessly and create a nice sort of arc from start to finish with plenty of textural variety. Lyrically, the songs are based on various dreams I have had. I'm really happy with how this one came out so have a listen! I've included both the 12 songs separated into their own tracks and the three "Acts" which lump all songs not separated by silence together and reveals the album's macrostructure. I recommend listening to the "Acts" versions to preserve the flow of the album if you use a playback program like iTunes that either crossfades or leaves a brief silence between tracks.

AAD11: Redlines
I made Redlines, my eleventh Album-A-Day (an Album-A-Day must be at least 20 minutes and written and recorded within 24 hours. See crapart.spacebar.org/aad), between 1/9/05 and 1/10/05. This one is a backlash to everything I've done in all my other AAD's. Having just acquired a brand new (awesome) keyboard--the Nord Electro--as well as a Kaoss pad, I set out to make something really loud and energetic. I accomplished this by cranking up the distortion on everything I recorded, using the Nord's distorted rhodes sound as the main instrument, as well as a palette of distorted drums, bass, melodica, and effects courtesy of the Kaoss Pad. I'm pretty happy with the results. Check it out!

AAD10: Slide Show
I made "Slide Show", my 10th Album-A-Day, with my cousin Ben 7/23/04. It's by far the best-recorded one yet, thanks to Ben's high-end equipment and engineering expertise.
Max: piano, keyboards, bass, vocals, melodica, guitars -- Ben: drums, glockenspiel, sampler, turntables, recording/mixing.

AAD9: Pendulum
Here's my ninth Album-A-Day, written and recorded within 24 hours (this one took about 16 hours) on 6/19/04. The initial concept of this was to use my sampler on every song. Eventually the album developed a kind of "time" theme, mostly due to my unending fascination with the difference between backwards and forwards sounds that I could make with the sampler. This one's completely different from the last one in that it's much more electronic, but I think it's every bit as organic. AAD8: Revolution Forever
"Revolution Forever" is my 8th Album-A-Day. As per the Album-A-Day rules, it was written, recorded, and performed within 24 hours. This one features live drums played poorly by me and a guest appearance by my good friend Jon Rodgers. Altogether a more indie rock kind of feel than my previous ones. Free Refills (.mp4)
This is the long-anticipated music video for the song, "Free Refills" off the album "Jurassic Bomb". I made the song and video with my cousin, Ben. Eerily accurate clay representations of us are depicted playing our appropriate instruments (more or less) in a beautiful jungle setting. We both painstakingly created and animated the clay musicians and animals. Ben built the awesome set (but I painted the backdrop!), manned the camera, and helped out on the animation. He also put in a lot of time editing the movie. I wrote the screenplay and did most of the animation. To get an mp3 of "Free Refills" and all the other songs from "Jurassic Bomb", visit http://maxandben.iuma.com/ . Enjoy!

Too Long
Here's one of my non-Album-A-Day songs, a demo I recorded 10/18/04. I know this is supposed to be a place for only side project stuff, but I think this one came out quite well (especially since it's entirely MIDI sounds aside from the vocals!) so I decided to put it up just for kicks. Enjoy...

Three Voices
This is an experimental electronic piece designed for three field recordings: boiling oil, a creaking door, and windchimes. The piece progresses from long, sustained sounds to short, more percussive attacks in three main sections. My goal with processing the field recordings was to keep them consistent with the movement of the piece while still maintaining their sonic identity. [Note: sorry, but this is a gigantic 40MB AIFF file instead of a compressed mp3 so as to preserve the finer details of the sound, since it is fairly empty and precise at times. The mp3 is available as the preview.]
