The Loves of Krishna in Indian Painting and Poetry: W.G. Archer
Krishna - the supreme trickster, the theophany of Lord Vishnu and arguably Hinduism's most popular deity - is not only the philosopher of the "Bhagavad Gita," but also the archetypal lover. Krishna's relationship with the cow-herding maidens represents, just like the erotic stance in Solomon's "The Song of Songs" in the Judeo-Christian tradition, the love between God and his creation. This metaphoric relationship is a a central motif of Indian art and poetry, and W. G. Archer's "The Loves of Krishna" provides a reliable guide to fully understanding and appreciating Krishna's prominent role in Indian sacred literature and iconography.

The Solitary of Juan Fernandez or the Real Robinson Crusoe: Joseph Xantier Saintine
Joseph Xavier Saintine is an unjustly forgotten French novelist and dramatist, whose real family name was Boniface. Saintine was born in Paris, in 1793. In 1823 he produced a volume of poetry in the manner of the Romanticists, entitled "Poèmes," odes, épitres." In 1836 appeared "Picciola," the story of the comte de Charney, a political prisoner in Piedmont, whose reason was saved by his cult of a tiny flower growing between the paving stones of his prison yard. He produced many other novels, "The Real Robinson Crusoe" being perhaps his masterpiece, having been translated into most European languages. Saintine was also a prolific dramatist, and collaborated in some hundred pieces with Scribe and others, usually under the name of Xavier.

Ideal Commonwealths: Five Utopias
The five utopias in this anthology are imaginary islands with a perfect social, legal, and political system. Plutarch's "Lycurgus," Thomas Morus'"Utopia," Francis Bacon's "New Atlantis," Tommaso Campanella's "City of the Sun," and Joseph Hall's "Mundus Alter et Idem" all have in common a few mythical archetypes inscribed in most cultures of the world. They resurge with special vitality when people are in difficult and critical times. However, the projection of the utopian myth of an ideal world in these five masterpeces does not take place towards the remote past, but either towards the future or towards distant and fictional places. How distant or fictional they are is up to the reader.

Musicians of Today: Romain Rolland
Romain Rolland, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1915, was a writer whose mind was sculpted by a passion for music and admiration for exceptional musicians. The famous novelist who was at the same time a reputed pacifist with interets in socialsim and Eastern mysticism has also authored a history of opera and a biography of Beethoven, maybe the best we have so far. In between, he wrote this wonderful volume on some of his contemporary giants in the realm of music, such as Wagner, Berlioz, Debussy, Strauss, and Saint-Saens. A book that still fascinates today, and which can be the perfect introduction to the musical works of these great luminaries.

Daniel Defoe: William Minto
William Minto (October 10, 1845 - March 1, 1893) was a Scottish man of letters, born at Auchintoul, Aberdeenshire, and educated at the University of Aberdeen. From 1874 to 1878 he edited the "Examiner," and in 1872 he published a "Manual of English Prose Literature," which was distinguished by sound judgment and sympathetic appreciation; his "Characteristics of English Poets from Chaucer to Shirley" (1874) showed the same high qualities. His monograph on Daniel Defoe, which was published in 1879 in the "English Men of Letters" series is still considered to be the standard biography of the genius who has created the wonderful adventures of Robinson Crusoe.

Dream Psychology: Sigmund Freud
In this seminal book Freud demonstrates that there is a psychological technique which makes it possible to interpret dreams, and that on the application of this technique, every dream reveals itself as a psychological structure, full of significance, and one which may be assigned to a specific place in the psychic activities of the waking state. Further, he elucidates the processes which underlie the strangeness and obscurity of dreams, and deduces from these processes the nature of the psychic forces whose conflict or co-operation is responsible for our dreams.

Mystical Christianity: Yogi Ramacharaka
Yogi Ramacharaka was the pseudonym of William Walker Atkinson, an American writer who was influential in the early 1990's in several spiritual/philosophical movements such as 'New Thought' (a precursor to today's New Age movement) and Theosophy. This mysterious writer, about whom we know virtually nothing, helped to popularize Eastern concepts in the Western world, with Yoga and a broadly-interpreted Hinduism being particular areas of focus. Ramacharaka's "Mystic Christianity" remains widely respected as an excellent primer for the study of comparative religion, at a time when the term was not yet coined.

Life Is a Dream: Pedro Calderon de la Barca
The constant interest in "Life Is a Dream," Calderon's masterpiece, hails not only from the play's complex philosophy, but also from its notable dramatic structure. The play is a derivation of the Christian legend of Barlaam and Josaphat, itself a derivation of the legend of the early years of the Buddha, in which the central argument is the conflict between free will and predestination.

Tales of the Jazz Age: F.S. Fitzgerald
The 1920's proved the most influential decade of Fitzgerald's development. "Tales of the Jazz Age," his 1922 exquisite collection of short stories, demonstrates the writer's interest in the same themes and motifs central to "The Great Gatsby," Fitzgerald's masterpiece published in 1926. This collection of short stories is also a literary testimony about the Lost Generation: Fitzgerald made several excursions to Europe, notably Paris and the French Riviera, and became friends with many members of the American expatriate community in Paris, notably Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein.

The Life of Byron: John Galt
Born in Irvine, England, John Galt was the son of a naval captain. When his family relocated to Malden in 1789, Galt became an apprentice and junior clerk, writing essays and stories for local journals in his spare time. He moved to London in 1804 to seek his fortune. In 1809, Galt began studying law at Lincoln's Inn. In 1824, Galt was appointed Secretary to the Canada Company, a charter company established to aid in the colonization of Upper Canada. While in Canada, Galt lived in Ontario, where he founded the town of Guelph in 1827. The town of Galt in Ontario is named after him. While subsequently travelling in Europe, Galt met and befriended Lord Byron. Decades later, he would publish the first full biography of Lord Byron, which is still unsurpassed in terms of accuracy and style. This well-documented biography is an amazing introduction to the extraordinary life and work of this great Romantic genius.

He was elected to the Académie Française in 1900, and received the Ribbon of the Legion of Honour in the next year. Among his works are monographs on Gustave Flaubert (1899), André Chénier (1902), and Emile Zola (1903); an admirably concise "Histoire de la littérature française depuis le XVII siècle jusqu'a nos jours"; series of literary studies on the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries; "Questions politiques"; "Propos littéraires" ; "Le Libéralisme"; "L'Anticléricalisme"; "Vie de Rousseau"; and "Petite histoire de la littérature française". The Napoleon of the People: Honoré De Balzac
"The Napoleon of the People" was originally published in the French periodical "Le Medicin de Campagne." It is a story told to a group of farmers by Goguelat, an ex-soldier who served under Napoleon in an infantry regiment. It was later included in "Folk Tales of Napoleon," a collection of stories centred around the great military commander. This amazing text shows Balzac at his highest peak as a narrator, a "raconteur" who knows how to reveal to his readers the passionate mystery of story-telling.
