Bob Lane was born at home in Denver, Colorado in 1936. Lane and his younger sister Beth were raised on a wheat farm in Eastern Colorado by their mother and step-father. Schooled in a one-room school house for the first few years, he found the farm a fascinating place to learn about the world of animals and human animals. At sixteen he ran away from home and at seventeen joined the United States Marine Corps for a four year hitch during the Korean “conflict”. After four years in the USMC Lane went to university on the G.I. Bill as an engineering student at the University of Texas. But after hearing T. S. Eliot read his poetry at Southern Methodist University on a rainy night in April he moved to California and changed from engineering to math to English literature. He later studied philosophy at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.

Lane has taught literature and philosophy at the college level for thirty-three years.

He has been a high school dropout, a marine, a service station attendant, a farm hand, a grocery clerk, a personnel supervisor, a junior accountant, an electronics technician, a small press editor, a construction laborer, and a teacher.

His book Reading the Bible: Intention, Text, Interpretation is available for purchase here.

Lane has been married to Karen Andersen for fifty-two years, and together they have three children and four grandsons. Bob and Karen live with their dog Keisha on Vancouver Island. [Picture: author and Erik Lane; photo by Alex Lane]
