The B317 is a two-lane, single carriageway federal highway in Germany. It runs through the Lörrach, south of the Black Forest. There were traffic problems at the junction with the main road into Maulburg. The highway authority developed and constructed an interesting solution which adds an offside merge lane for left-turning traffic from the side road. This 4-page document describes the junction. It includes an attached video clip, photos, a junction plan, junction flows and junction geometrics (PDF. A4 landscape, 1.1 MB)

In African countries, often the accidents which occur on roads and railway lines have nothing to do with transport itself. They are much more related to the social and commercial activities which the local population carry out on or next to the transport facility. In rural areas inin sub-Saharan Africa the non-transport activities which are carried out on or next to the road/railway are easily apparent. For example, herds of cattle, goats or pigs graze next to the road and present a safety hazard. This document describes in words and pictures some of the "social uses" - including rural economic uses - which transport corridors are put to in Benin. The author of the document is Mr. Felicien Amakpe, who is a Benin citizen and an agronomics engineer. 38 pages including covers, photo-document, 35+ photos. PDF A4 landscape layout. Version 1.03, January 2008 (English).

Ganvie is a lake town in Benin, situated on Lake Nokoué. It is some 8 km from Abomey-Calavi (the second largest city in Benin, in terms of population) and around 25 km as the crow flies from Cotonou (the commercial capital of Benin). Waterway transport in Ganvie is a mode of life and not just a means of movement. For example, the pirogues are used as places where people can take a rest. There is no transport choice; pirogues are the only option. The document shows through the use of photographs and texts the different aspects of ife in this lake-dwelling community. The author of the document is Mr. Placide Badji, who is a Benin citizen. He is a civil engineer and holds a masters degree in transport economics. 27 pages including covers, photo-document, 20+ photos. PDF A4 landscape layout, 2.1MB. Highway and traffic engineers, urban and rural planners are often confronted with similar problems but in different countries of the world. In some cases one root cause of the problem may not be immediately apparent. For example similar modes of transport may take on quite different shapes and importance. NMT (non-motorised transport) includes pedestrians and cyclists and is an important general mode of transport in Benin. Introduction to the different types of NMT presently in use in Benin.Prepared with Placide Badji of Benin. Mr. Badji has a degree in civil engineering and an MSc. in Transport Economics. 14+ photos. 22 pages including covers, photo-document, 14+ photos. PDF A4 landscape layout, 1.1MB. Download: $6.99

A "Best practice" series document. Engineers and urban architects have entered a new discussion on how to shape the streetscape. Generally speaking this is the area between building frontages but it includes city squares and town market places as much as roads, footpaths and pedestrian precincts. The specialists want to make the streetscape more attractive for its users. One way towards this is to move away from straight-forward asphalt roads and footpaths to architecturally designed “environments” which use special materials. Examples of existing good practice can provide designers with ideas and a stimulation to develop new designs of their own. Brandenburg is Germany’s state (or ‘Land’)which surrounds the capital city of Berlin. 34 pages including covers, PDF landscape, 2.3 MB, 11 examples in standard one-per-page layout together with information on the local communities, contact details etc. Version 1.03 (minor changes)

Transport in Rural Sub Saharan Africa has always been an issue that inhibits health services, development programmes and financial development. The dispersal of rural populations combined with poor road infrastructure and a lack of appropriate local services has created an inequality of wealth and wellbeing. The real challenge is to get that final transport stage in place from services to rural populations. The eRanger vehicles were designed to provide appropriate, low-cost transport capacity to cover the final link in the transport chain to the front door of rural communities. The design is based on the principle of using a vehicle that is simple, capable and cost effective A4 landscape pdf, 1.33mb, 25 pages including covers

Cycling is seen as a form of transport which not only benefits the health of the rider but also the health of the planet. However providing road space for cyclists can be difficult. One way of doing this is to introduce "core traffic lanes". These basically involve taking an urban two-lane road, removing the existing lane and centre-line markings, adding markings for a cycle lane in each direction - and leaving whatever of the width remains for two-way motorised traffic flows. This document presents some examples of this practice taken from Swiss, German and UK practice. 54 pages including covers, PDF, 2.1 MB, 18 examples of core traffic lanes, 6 examples of "conventional" arrangements, summary table, notes from the UK, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, relevant organisations etc. This is a minor update of the "engineer's version".

For many engineers and planners, rickshaws are an old form of transport – not valid for today - and so they do not need to design for them. However their use is on the increase in Europe. This document includes examples of successful services and starter information on dimensions. It offers a basis for discussing the need to provide adequate road space for these vehicles.
