  • Witchy Kids at School

    2008 Jun 24

There are all kinds of minorities. At many schools, "minorities" outnumber the "majority." But what about the Spiritual Minority? I'm not just talking about witchy children like the hero of "My Romantic Spell." I'm also talking about young people who value compassion and caring. I'm talking about middle schoolers who care about other people, who meditate, who pray, who volunteer. I'm talking about high school age young adults who help other students do better in math, who go on spiritual retreats with their parents, who play music or sing as a form of worship. Do these young people need to be identified and protected? Or are they almost automatically protected by their compassion and connection to their community? Does listening to the sound of the night, or standing on the edge of a storm watching, give them some sort of almost magical protection? I wonder.
  • The Christmas Gift Anyone Can Give--Part 2

    2007 Dec 21

It is Christmas time. It is the time to give a gift from the heart. Sometimes, some people, especially children who don't have jobs and maybe don't get much for allowance, have trouble finding a gift they can afford to give. But you are a reader! Most readers make wonderful writers. To create a wonderful Christmas, Yule, Hanuka or Kwanzaa card with a personal letter to someone you know, grab a piece of paper and a pencil and answer these questions in sentence form. Use the suggested key words underneath the questions to get your brain started.

What is it about your (Dad, Mom, Nanna, friend) that you like best?
    Smile
    Hug
    Cooking

What did you do with them last year that really made you smile?
    Walk
    Shop
    Travel

Where would you take them for a holiday dinner, if you could?
    Hawaii
    The moon
    Atlantis--before it sank

What would you like to do with them on over the Holidays?
    Movie
    Hot chocolate
    Nap

What would you like to thank them for?
    Love
    Cookies
    Spending time

When you have the writing done, take another sheet of paper, fold it in half and draw something on the front. If you are terrible at drawing, cut a photo out of a magazine (if it isn't your magazine, ask first), or better yet, get a photograph of the person you are writing about and glue that on the front. Place the letter inside the card and give it to your special someone. I would probably do it Christmas Eve.

  • The Christmas Gift Anyone Can Give--Part 1

    2007 Dec 21

Not everyone has money to buy an expensive Christmas present. If you, one of your children, or one of your students, wants to give a valuable and personal Christmas Gift but can't afford to, try this:

    Go to your closet,
    Try on everything in there,
Make a pile for everything that doesn't fit,
Also toss aside everything you haven't worn in 2007,
(kids will need some adult supervision here),
Then take a trash bag or two and put all those clothes in the bags, and
    Take them to Good Will.

Your clothes will be sold for a song to someone who probably needs them more than you.

To me, Christmas is the generosity holiday. If you will think about this project, enjoy doing it, then think back on the experience fondly, I believe you will have the best Christmas ever.

  • Middle School Writing--the Final Secret

    2007 Dec 02

Okay, you've waited long enough! One of the most important secrets of learning to write is knowing WHAT to write. For me, the "knowing what to write" part is the most creative part. At the same time, a seventh grader can't turn in a paper she KNOWS how to write, she can only turn in a paper she has actually written. So, at some point you've got to put your thoughts on paper. To write it down quickly, I recommend using a timer--a kitchen timer or watch will do.

Get your outline out, set your timer for 5 minutes and see how much you can get done before the darned thing rings! You'll probably be able to write about one paragraph, maybe two. Take a break. Maybe set the timer again. Pat the cat. Grab some toast. Help mom with the laundry. Then grab the timer and see how much more you can get done in another five minutes.

This is the method I used when writing, "My Romantic Spell." Each ten minute set of writing and resting would produce 1 or 2 paragraphs. If each page requires 4 paragraphs, then in 1 hour I could easily write 6 paragraphs or a page and a half of well organized prose. Isn't a page and a half the typical length of a middle school paper? Did you know you could get the whole darned thing done in one painless hour? Pretty wild.

I'm working on a non-fiction project now. It is called "Quality Management: The Laughing Buddha's Guide." This is the exact method I'm using. Why? I want my quality management book done fast so I can get on to writing "My Dream Spell." If it works for me, why wouldn't it work even better for you? I bet it would. But don't take my word for it, try it and see.

  • Teaching Middle Schoolers to Write

    2007 Nov 29

Middle school kids certainly can learn to write and write well. However, they may need to use "professional" writing techniques to do it.

One day recently, I was helping a seventh grader who was way behind on writing a 1-2 page paper. Now some people might say, "A page or two? All you need to write that little bit is a topic!" Not so for this young man. So, since I know that even professional writers write faster and better in response to questions than they do to a prompt, I wrote down eight or ten questions based on his topic and things he had told me from his notes. That helped a little, but a few minutes later, I noticed he was scratching his head with his pencil.

So to help this young man keep writing, I pulled out another "professional" technique and asked him the questions out loud, and when he gave me examples or answers from his notes, I jotted down key words, 2-3 under each question. "Now," I told him, "just answer each question by writing a sentence or three about each keyword, and you'll be golden." Sure enough, this worked great for about one page, then, once again, I saw him scratching his head with a pencil.

Want to know the third "professional" technique I used to jump start the last section of his paper? Check back soon, or, if you just can't wait, drop me a note here.
  • The Smallest Joy

    2007 Nov 21

Some of you may know that I live with three chronic illness: Periodic Paralysis, Celiac Disease and good old fashioned Migraines. So, it is no surprise that I have bad days from time to time--especially if the weather changes, I don't get enough sleep, I type too long on a story or even if I take it easy. Well yesterday was a good day. Why? Warm fluffy purple socks fresh from the drier, and my feet warm and content in a cushy pair of running shoes. Sometimes it is the smallest things that bring us the greatest joy.
