A tutorial approach to programming the direct stiffness method of plane frame analysis using Scilab. A set of Scilab functions are developed over 9 tutorials and 15 pages. Knowledge of stiffness method is presumed and the focus is on developing the Scilab functions. An example problem from "Weaver, W & Gere, J.M., Matrix Analysis of Framed Structures, 2ed." is used for validation.

    Hi,

I teach structural engineering to graduate students and my interests are Structural Dynamics, Numerical Computations and Computer Applications to Structural Engineering. I prefer using free/open source software.

The two eBooks that I have published on Lulu are for those interested in the free software for numerical computations, Scilab. They are an outcome of a two-day workshop I conducted for students. Both eBooks use a tutorial approach and are deliberately kept extremely compact.

Scilab - A Hands on Introduction is usable by anyone wishing to begin learning Scilab on their own and is free to download.

Matrix Structural Analysis of Plane Frames using Scilab
describes the development of a set of Scilab functions for Matrix Structural Analysis of Plane Frames. This presumes the reader has knowledge of the direct stiffness method of structural analysis. The emphasis is on developing Scilab functions and not on teaching the direct stiffness method.
