  • unemployment in cali

    2008 May 08

Is anyone else out there crushed by the lack of work in California? My husband hasn't had much work this year at all and was just told there wont be anything new until mid June. How are people going to make it?? How are we going to make it?? Is there an end to this mess or is it time to pick up and move? We came to California because of all the work, now there isn't any.

Does anyone have any insight on the future of California workers??

Christmas, as told by a 7 year old.
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Saturday 03 of September, 2005
My daughter says the darndest things! Here is a conversation between my precious 7 year old and myself the other day.

Hannah said, "I know what Christmas is about. Since Santa can't give Jesus the presents, he gives them to us."

I asked, "Who told you that?"

Hannah said, "I read it in the bible."

    a funny story
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Monday 29 of August, 2005
This was from an e-mail that I received. It made me laugh, so I will pass it on!

    "A Hillybilly Fish Story"text

"A hillbilly was stopped by a game warden in Arkansas recently with
two ice chests of fish. He was leaving a cove well known for its
    fishing.

The game warden asked the man, "Do you have a license to catch those fish?"

"Naw, sir, I ain't got none of them there licenses, no. You must
understand these here are my pet fish."
"Pet fish?" said the game warden.
"Ya. Every night I take these here fish down to da lake and let them
swim 'round for a while. Then I whistle and they jump rat back into this here ice chest and I take them home."

"That's a bunch of hooey! Fish can't do that!" says the warden

The hillbilly looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, "It's the truth Mr.Government man, I'll show you. It really works."

"Okay," said the game warden, " I've GOT to see this!"

The hillbilly poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited.

After several minutes, the game warden turned to him and said,
    "Well?"

    "Well, what?" said the hillbilly.

The warden said, "When are you going to call them back?"

The hillbilly said, "Call who back?"

    "The FISH!" replied the warden.

    "What fish?" answered the hillbilly.

We in Arkansas may not be as smart as some city slickers,
but we aren't as dumb as most government employees."

    Fillmore Resident Publishes Cookbook

Shelly Hadley, a resident of Fillmore since 1997, announces publication of her first cookbook, The Simple Recipe Cookbook, in conjunction with Lulu, the world’s only independent publishing and print-on-demand marketplace and community for all things digital.

The Simple Recipe Cookbook is a cookbook filled with simple recipes for simple lifestyles, and that are simply delicious. This 182 page cookbook can be printed as a spiral bound or perfect bound book. The recipes are easy to follow and use common ingredients; not the hard to find items often found in recipes. From appetizers to desserts, there is something for everyone in this cookbook.

Coming from a family of fourteen children, Shelly Hadley had to learn to be frugal. From growing gardens, wearing hand-me-downs, and clipping coupons; there were many things that taught Shelly to make the best with what she had. Shelly decided to share her ideas and has created a great collection of simple and delicious recipes in her new book. When she is not at her part-time job as an office manager, Shelly enjoys cooking, gardening and spending time with her daughter and step children.

Once the book was completed, Shelly turned to Lulu for printing. Founded in 2002, Lulu is the web’s premier independent publishing marketplace for digital do-it-yourselfers. The only place on the web where you can publish, sell and buy any and all things digital, i.e. books, music, comics, photographs, movies, etc.

The Simple Recipe Cookbook by Shelly Hadley is available online at www.lulu.com/shellyhadley or locally at Treasures in Thyme and Circle K.

    Interesting fun facts
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Wednesday 16 of November, 2005
    1. If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would
have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.
    (Hardly seems worth it)

    2. If you fart consistently for 6 years and 9 months, enough
gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.
    (Now that's more like it)

    3. A pig's orgasm lasts for 30 minutes.
(In my next life I want to be a pig)
(How'd they figure this out, and why?)

    4. Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
(Still can't get over that pig thing)
(Don't try this at home...maybe at work?)

    5. Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.
(Is that why Flipper was always smiling?)
(And pigs get 30-minute orgasms? Doesn't seem fair)

    6. The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.
    (Hmmmmmmmmm........)

    7. Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer
    than left-handed people do.
(If you're ambidextrous do you split the difference?)

    8. The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its
own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.
    (From drinking little bottles of...?)
(Did taxpayers pay for this research??)

    9. Polar bears are left handed.
(Who knew....? Who cares? How'd they find out, did they ask them?)

    10. The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.
(What can be so tasty on the bottom of the pond?)

    11. The flea can jump 350 times its body length.
It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.
(30 minutes...can you imagine?? And why pigs?)

    12. A cockroach will live nine days without it's head, before it starves to death.
    (Creepy)

    13. The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body.
The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.
    (Honey, I'm home. What the....)
(Well, at least pigs get a break there...)

    14. Some lions mate over 50 times a day.
(In my next life I still want to be a pig ... quality over quantity)

    15. Butterflies taste with their feet.
(Oh, Geez) (That's almost as bad as catfish)

    16. An ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain.
(I know some people like that.)

    17. Starfish don't have brains.
(I know some people like that too.)

Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Wednesday 03 of May, 2006
I have tried everything to get rid of the gophers & moles in our yard! I have put garlic, garlic salt, onions, and a store bought sonic repellent and nothing works! Yesterday, I put a smoke bomb down a very fresh hole. I was sure I got that darn guy! A couple of hours later, I checked the hole to find the two ends of the smoke bomb lying above the newly made hole. The darn thing dug up the cartridge and left it above ground for me to see he is still alive!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is the size of a mouse and it is outsmarting me daily! Any tips would be greatly appreciated. No, I will not allow a snake...

I remember a huge snowball bush growing outside our front porch at the Lubbers' house. I am bringing some childhood back to life, as today, I planted two snowball bushes on either side of our front porch at the Hadley house! I can't wait until they are in full bloom. I will feel like a kid again! Happy spring!

My horror-scope was pretty good today. Read the copy below and apply it to your life!

Life isn't about winning and losing — it's about how much you enjoy playing the game. Ask yourself if you're doing exactly what it is you need to be doing. If the answer is no, start making changes.

I sent an e-mail to Oprah yesterday. Do you think she will like my book? My brother-in-law, Dale, told me to send my cookbook to Oprah and if she likes it, I would sell a boat load of books! Wish me luck, Dale!! I will say hi to you from her show!

I also asked Paula Deen if she would like to review it. Maybe, if I get some big names to review it, they would recommend it. Hell, they may even retire their books and just use mine! It does have every recipe that's worth the while!

Get your copy today! Once I am famous, I may not be so cheap with the price!!!

    sunny days

    Tuesday 13 of December, 2005
I am amazed that I have to water the grass today. It's December! I haven't had to open the big trunk and pull out the winter coats yet. All the birds are still here. The flowers, the fruit, the greens, the attitudes, are all just like spring! I think back to Colorado and try to remember the winters there. I know it was cold!!! I remember it was below zero for like two weeks straight in December of 1986. I was working a Christmas seasonal job at a toy store and had to walk to work. It wasn't far, but I froze my (toes) off because it had snowed, then was below zero keeping everything frozen. Would I ever be able to go back to that after living here? Would Hannah get used to where I used to call home? Would I get used to it again or would it be like riding a snow sled? Would Hannah become homesick there as I am here? Is she too young to realize? Would she remember California and her paternal family? Is the benefit worth more than the possible harm? Is the benefit still there or just a fond memory? Some things, we will never know. There is only one thing that I know at this very moment, and that is that I need to quit blogging and go move the water! The grass is going to flood! Off to chores now. Take care of it.

    A Handful of Teeth
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Tuesday 30 of January, 2007
I had to take Hannah to the dentist yesterday. She is my brave, 9 year old girl. Last Monday, she had 6 cavities filled. This Monday, she had 3 teeth pulled. The dentist was going for 4, but only 3 let go. She has a cluster of teeth trying to come down where only one front tooth should be. She had one front baby tooth, and two side baby teeth pulled. There are two other adult front teeth trying to come into the place for one adult front tooth. The dentist tried to pull one of the two adult teeth, but it didn't come. He thinks it may be attached to the other adult tooth there. When her front baby teeth came in, they were split. I think this explains so may other "bonus" teeth. It's like her mouth is trying to make 4 new adult front teeth to replace the 4 split baby front teeth that were once there. I pray that it all comes in and works out for her.

She was so brave at all three visits so far. I was not so brave! I held back tears and fears for weeks now. She was just so strong, I couldn't believe it. I didn't know I had raised such a tough little big girl!!

You rock, Hannah! You are my rock, Hannah! Good job, sweetie! I love you!! I am so proud of who you have become! Stay strong in everything you do!

    Happy Holidays
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Monday 04 of December, 2006
Hey everyone! Tis the season! We just got done with Hannah's birthday and Thanksgiving, now on to Christmas! Got the tree up already, it looks beautiful. Hannah told me she likes this time of year because there are lights everywhere in the house, she loves the tree and she likes how our town puts up little lights and decorations down the main streets. Cute how a kid can be so sentimental about the holidays. She is growing up to be a beautiful person!

We had put up a custom birthday banner for her and someone stole it right off of our fence! It was a huge vinyl banner that said, "Happy Birthday Hannah", either someone cheap knows another Hannah or someone is just plain mean!! I hope you get it, stealer!!!

Happy Holidays! Don't forget to get everyone on your list a copy of my book!

    Enjoy!

    poor kitty
Shelly Hadley in Shelly Hadley's Blog
    Friday 08 of September, 2006
My husband found a newborn kitten in his tractor at work last Wednesday. He told me the story that night and I made him drive back to work and get the helpless little thing.

He went and got her and brought the tiny baby home. She was the most beautiful kitten I had ever seen. She was gray with dark stripes. One of her legs looked like a racoon's tail. Her face was precious. Mostly white, with an afro of dark hair. She looked like she had a wig on. Precious, just precious.

So, I held her and fed her and brushed her and hugged her and let her cry herself to sleep time after time all through the night. I was so afraid she wouldn't make it through the night. She did. What a strong little girl. I was so happy she was still purring and meowing the next day. I thought we had saved her tiny little life.

As my daughter got ready for school Thursday, she wanted to stay home and get to know the kitty. She kept coming to pet her and then go back to continue getting ready for school. I told her the kitten was still in critical condition. She asked if she could stay home from school. Of course not, I would make sure the kitty was fine. She said, "Even if she died today, cats have nine lives!"

How I wish that were true. About an hour after my daughter went off to school, the little kitty gave up life and went to heaven. I had been holding her for an hour, grooming her and dropping milk in her tiny crying mouth. She was trying so hard to live. I put her in her box for a nap and she never woke up.

Yesterday, may have been the saddest day in my life. Not only the kitten, but my daughter was so mad at God. She said He is so unfair to humans and to animals. I told her God probably wanted the kitty in heaven so she can find a new mother to feed her and take care of her. There just weren't any mothers around on the earth. I have never seen such sad faces over knowing something for only hours.

My point: Take each day and act as if it's the last. You never know when God may want to share some of your things!!

Go to heaven little kitty. We will always love you!
