Stephen McAllister served as a pilot and staff officer in the United States Air Force for over twenty-five years retiring in 2006. He participated in the 1991 war against Iraq and was stationed for eight months in Afghanistan during 2003. It was from this last deployment that he drew the experiences that formed the genesis of a lengthy diary. Two stories from that diary were collected with other military writing by the National Endowment for the Arts and published through Random House with the title Operation Homecoming, released on September 12, 2006.
Born and raised in rural Illinois, he received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Philosophy and did Master’s degree work in both philosophy and computer sciences. He writes fiction, poetry and essays and has had works published in Taj Mahal Review and Well Versed 2007 from the Columbia Chapter of the Missouri Writer's Guild. In his spare time he reads, plays the guitar, relaxes turning wooden bowls and vases on lathes and enjoys the company of his wife and single malt whisky.

A compilation of emails sent home while the author was stationed at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. Going beyond the simple “Dear folks, today I . . .” letter, the author writes about his observations and personal impressions. Some observations are humorous, because despite its best efforts, the military can’t help but be silly at times. Some are quite emotional. In a war zone with people being killed on a daily basis, emotional events are a common occurrence. And others are very personal and introspective. The sum is a revealing look at the military and our role in Afghanistan.
