Print: $23.30 Download: FREE This marks the first of hopefully many issues of Special Projects as a publication showcasing the work of photography students working on a common (elected) theme over a semester’s time. The class is PHO 2453 Special Projects Digital Photography at Oakland Community College, Royal Oak, Michigan.
So how does one interpret identity visually? In this book the students explore many different views such as the fractured or multi-faceted character, the identity of a place, and the identity of architectural elements as revealed in the details.

Print: $21.90 Download: FREE In Issue 5 of Special Projects, OCC Royal Oak students have selected the theme of Movement to work on for the semester. Movement is revealed–or concealed–with time. Photography captures time. As John Szarkowski wrote, “a discreet parcel of time.” Of all the themes elected so far, this one seems to have the most natural inclination towards photographic technology.
However, the most obvious interpretations aren’t always the best or most interesting. Students are always strongly encouraged to interpret the theme with their concept as creatively as possible, so long as they are able to intelligently discuss their interpretation. The following interpretations of movement explore techniques and/or concepts such as painting with light, the constant motion of children, movement associated with music, and even the absence of movement.

Print: $31.30 Download: FREE In Issue 4 of Special Projects, the elected theme is Senses. Initially, one begins with considering the obvious senses of sight, smell, touch, sound and taste. However, sense can also be interpreted as an awareness or perception of an idea or concept. Once students began looking at the theme in this light, their ideas really began to evolve. The following photo series concepts range from the “sense of taste” to a “sense of wonder,” touching on topics such as natural beauty, fashion, sensuality, drug use and symbolisms of fear. Some students took a more lighthearted approach, while others delved deep into their own psyche.

Print: $28.90 Download: FREE In Issue 3 of Special Projects, photography students at Oakland Community College in Royal Oak, Michigan tackle the theme of Man & Nature. This theme fell among three main interpretations: the nature of man/mankind, nature overcoming mankind’s creations, and then both literal and inventive interpretations of man and nature in day to day life. You will see in the students’ work that the persistence of nature proved to be a reoccurring topic, as well as different perspectives on the “true” nature of man.
