Hang Onto Your Teeth
The passion of a writer is often one which stems from defeat and loss. In "Hang Onto Your Teeth" Stephen Mead explores this psychological drama through the character of William Bradstreet, an author who has been creatively blocked since the murder of his gay son, Colin. Five years after his son's death, William at last begins the painful process of coming to terms with the sources of Colin's life and death. In theory it sounds simple enough: William just has to pick up a pen. Theory and actuality remain a searing conflict for William, however, especially as he forces himself to confront the prejudices he too had for his own child. With each page, "Hang Onto Your Teeth" leads the reader deeper into the interior of William's struggle, creating a tightrope of eloquent tension. The climax resulting from this is one of haunting impact and yet a lesson in the profoundly redeeming powers of love.
Note: This paperback is formatted like a writer's journal with illustrated borders and a variety of fonts.

"Safe & Other Love Poems"
From the early 1990's, Stephen Mead's poetry has been appearing in both literary print magazines and online sites internationally. Much of this well received work has been spiritual explorations of sensuality often combined with his art. A few years ago Stephen sent some poems to Frank Moore of Love Underground Visionary Revolution, www.luver.com., and in Jan. '06 Frank wrote back saying he'd play Stephen's poetry on his radio show should Stephen care to send in a tape. At the time Stephen was working on recording his poetry in conjunction with making films of his artwork, including his well known sensuous piece "31 Kisses", so in typical obsessively creative fashion Stephen got to work on this recording. The result became "Safe & Other Love Poems", a fifty minute celebration of romance set to music. A big thank you goes to Simon Toon of "Slam Idol Poetry Podcast", Linda DiFeterici of "Eadon's Place" and Michael Potter of "Coffee House To Go", for already sharing some of these mp3's with the world.

Heroines Unlikely
First Place Winner of The Gutenberg Litegraphic Society's Picture-Story Category, June '03, "Heroines Unlikely" is Stephen Mead's homage to the female spirit. From pastels done in the early '80's, then to mixed media and oil works from the '90's, "Heroines Unlikely" culminates with Stephen's watercolor pencil on canvas explorations in the year 2000, when the text for "Heroines" was written. Archived as scanned images on Scars.tv, these images have since been digitally re-mastered. The book, 40 pages in all, has excellent color plates and would make for a great gift, especially for those who appreciate strong women of character.
