Ascent of Mount Carmel

Ascent of Mount CarmelAscent of Mount Carmel (book)

Print: $14.95

St. John of the Cross, has done what few others before or have since accomplished. Not achieved, but accomplished. To ascend “Jacob's Ladder” and provide directions to those behind him. The search to experience God is nothing new, what makes St John different is his road map. He provides minute bezels of wisdom and key components along the way. No one since Apostle Paul and the works of Dionysius the Areopagite has a person written down such detail in the quest to unite with God. His insight is keen, his perception is acute, His ability to lay bare the contents separating the functions of the soul from the spirit, are indeed monumental. St John has opened the realm of contemplation, and has pushed the frontiers of human expression beyond where any writer has succeeded in venturing before. His skill and ability is made apparent in his other works, most notably the follow-on book “ The Dark Night of the Soul”

This work is a task of love, formed from passion for the origin of words and their initial roots and meanings. This work is a culmination of numerous hours of research, annotations, reference checks and a sheer tenacity to know the meaning of words. The approach to this work is to ensure the reader's understanding is in keeping with the spirit and intent of the author. This is achieved by correctly conveying and ensuring today’s reader has grasped this and is able to move on without interruption. Our words are all we have to relate and pass on to one another what we have come to know. Unless we are capable to express what transcends our thoughts and words, into tangible and workable pieces to formulate a map for others to navigate with, we have failed as the servant who hid the money for fear of loosing it.

Pseudo Dionysius recaptures for us the true essence of, Who God is, who we are, and how all things exist within Him. So often we pull God down and into what we will have Him be. We will apply attributes and other factors to Him as though these are garnered from another source. When He's already explained to us WHO HE IS, when He responded: “I AM Who AM,” which could easily be parleyed into “I AM WHAT YOU NEED.” From the great plethora of written texts, there are two outstanding writers who must always be given due respect and recognition. In the Roman or Latin West its Augustine, and in the Greek East, it is Pseudo Dionysius. To appreciate and grasp the benefits, of what remains, of the Dionysian Corpus, it must be understood from his perspective, time, and place. He is at the turn of the millennial, he's no doubt classically trained and his rhetoric does not suffer, in forming his thorough and exhaustive explanations.

The Way of Perfection

The Way of PerfectionThe Way of Perfection (book)

Print: $14.94

Despite the fact this inspiring classic on the practice of pray was written almost four centuries ago, it is as fresh and meaningful today as it was when Teresa first wrote it. The Way of Perfection is a practical guide to prayer setting forth her counsels and directives for the attainment of spiritual perfection. Through the entire work, the author's desire to teach a deep and lasting love of prayer begins with a treatment of the three essentials of the prayer in a fulfilled life: 1) fraternal love 2) detachment from created things 3) true humility. Teresa's counsels on these are not only the fruit of lofty mental speculation, but of mature practical experience. This work can be broken into two sections. The first section, she develops these ideas and brings the reader directly to the subjects of prayer and contemplation. Then she gives various maxims for the practice of prayer and leads up to the topic, which occupies the balance of the book; a detailed and inspiring commentary on the Lord's Prayer.

This historical episode is without a doubt an event, which shall not be repeated. This is a meditative, a contemplative written work designed to re-ignite the lost pictorial memory, which forever changed mankind’s relationship with God. The points of reference or as we refer to them today as stations, are merely places believed to be the actual spaces where significant events unfolded as our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ passed through, as He made his way to Golgotha. In the Eighteenth Century, the Franciscans played a major role in the development of this particular pilgrimage. This work is meant to be read slowly. It crosses all denominations and is designed to express the ultimate of love’s expression written down for us in John 3:16 Take a moment and reflect on what has happened for you, me and all of mankind.

“Spiritual people suffer great trials, not so much of the aridities which they suffer, as from the fear which haunts them as if they were lost on the road, believing that all the spiritual blessings are over for them, and God has abandoned them since they no longer can find help or pleasure in good things”. An excerpt, from the 10th chapter of “The Dark Night”; Book One Indeed...this is the fear, which comes to plague all pilgrims as they pass through the road, which leads to God. St. John however, continually, lays down similar “night lights” atop of the guideposts along the way, ensuring everyone a safe passage. This book concludes the journey started in “The Ascent of Mount Carmel”. This illustrious pilgrimage to union with God is eloquently laid out in and expound from prose. St. John takes to pilgrim from the carnage of himself to the inner sanctum with God. Many theologians and spiritual masterminds have written similar works, but none so precise as St John of the Cross.

In her Revelations, Julian shows great charm in the childlike, tender quality of her expression. She sees God as one Who delights in His creation and desires that we would recognize this and participate. Julian's attitude regarding the "all shall be well" largely depends on acceptance of the limitations of our own vision and the knowledge that the vastness of divine providence is mysterious. Julian has remained a continual evolving manuscript for numerous individuals both of the laity, clergy and scholastic vocations. This is quite remarkable, since the flip side of this story is the “Ladder of Perfection” by Walter Hilton OSA, which many contend was written to Julian. This work has a life of its own and is continually resurfacing. Julian emphasizes numerous points of doctrine, with an exquisite joy, focusing on “the bliss and glory” rather than the idea of earth's being a battleground for good and evil. This is one thing which sets her apart from many others, regardless of their gender.

In 1125, he became a professor in the monastery, in 1133, director of the attached school, in time becoming the prior. He dies in St. Victor on February 11, 1141. He was probably one of the greatest theologians of the 12th century, coupled with Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure, and Peter Lombard, who were likewise professors of theology. Print: $18.00

Although various books and articles have been published recently upon the subject of monasticism, there is singularly little that deals with its origin in Egypt. English, French and German writers, whose works cover a wider field, have necessarily been unable to devote much space to the particular question of the origin. The purpose therefore of the first part of this study is an attempt to show how monasticism grew out of the special conditions of thought and life in Egypt, a mode of approach which has not apparently been adopted elsewhere to the same extent. The latter part deals with a subject that has been treated attractively by many writers, but it aims at being a survey of the first century of monasticism in Egypt, based upon those sources which have been generally accepted by recent criticism as the most reliable.

The scribe of this Preface was travelling in Germany, when he by chance met with a book, entitled, The History of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, from, the Meditations of Anne Catherine Emmerich, which appeared to him both interesting and edifying. Its style was unpretending, its ideas simple, its tone unassuming, its sentiments unexaggerated, and its every sentence expressive of the most complete and entire submission to the Church. Yet, at the same time, it would have been difficult anywhere to meet with a more touching and life like paraphrase of the Gospel narrative. To be convinced of this fact, we need but study the writings or what is related of Saints Francis of Assisi, Bernard, Bridget, Hildegard, Catherine of Genoa, Catherine of Sienna, Ignatius, John of the Cross, Teresa, and an immense number of other holy persons who are less known.. So much being conceded, it is clear that in considering Sister Emmerich to have been inspired by God’s Holy Spirit.

Here for the first time is an assembled collection of some of Evagrius of Pontus most significant writings to date. Evigarius is considered to be one of the most influential and controversial monastic theologians of the fourth century, yet he remains for many a mere reference or just another monk from the past. Often times he is alternately considered a saint while the opposing camps have slotted him with as a heretic along with Origen. Yet the influence of his writings is immeasurable, for in the West his teachings were chiefly passed down and shared via his disciple John Cassian; who in his own right is a prominent figure in desert monasticism. Nevertheless, in the East his texts have always been widely read, albeit often under the pseudonyms of less-suspicious authors. His works remain some of the best for those who delve deeper into the writings among the Greek influences and those who have helped to define and shape the monastic world.

The author's object is to explain the transformation of a fellow contemplative's ascent into union with God. The transformation and changes which take place within their mind and heart as they approach God. The ascent is based on Dionysian techniques which appears to be offerered in a disorderly presentation. The novice is perhaps uneducated in Latin and therefore be unable to appreciate the literature directly himself. One eternal situation of Christianity is that the popularity of false mysticism and questionable spirituality will constantly blind honest seekers to the truth, which is the gift of God. Today, when there is a revival of interest in the mystics of the 14th century, it is unlikely that the works of Walter Hilton will top any best seller lists. The scope of Walter’s work is far beyond the limitations of this essay, but several outstanding points, illustrated in his works, are both inspiring and delightful, if our 21st century blinders are removed. Walter dealt with many problems in his readership that continue to exist and had existed for fourteen centuries in his day! He presented eternal truths and sought to clarify equally eternal confusion. Walter is the truly learned man, and his works include hundreds of references to the Scriptures and the works of the Fathers and theologians which spanned many centuries.

You are indeed holding what is a masterpiece of spiritual literature. This work by Teresa of Avila has long been considered a monumental achievement, particularly given the trends, conditions of the surrounding under, which it was written, coupled with her own ailments during her life time. In this treatise, she moves quickly through the first few mansion, while glossing over and previous issues already addresses in her “Way of Perfection.” Teresa’s initial intent was to provided for her fellow sisters, it has since then blossomed into a bountiful harvest for those who truly choose to follow her sound advice and follow these steps. This work has survived numerous spiritual phases simply because it is real, it is true and it works. For all who embark upon their spiritual quest for unification with God, this is a must guide. Of all his efforts, outside of the realm of science, most individuals are familiar with Pascal's influential theological work, referred to as Pensées ("Thoughts"). This work was not completed before his death. It was to have been a sustained and coherent examination and defense of the Christian belief system, written more as a defense of the Christian religion. This work was not complete, but was assembled from scattered papers gathered from his other works. Concerning religion, Pascal’s main strategies was to use the contradictory philosophies of Skepticism and Stoicism, which he assails against via Montaigne and Epictetus. This effort was intended to usher the perplexed and bewildered individual to such despair and confusion that he would embrace God. This approach and overall strategy was deemed quite hazardous by a few others namely Pierre Nicole and Antoine Arnauld, among other friends and scholars of Port-Royal, which Blaise alludes to within this particular text.

The aim of this volume is to sketch the history of the monastic institution from its origin to its overthrow in the Reformation period, understandably, although the institution is by no means now extinct, its power was practically broken in the sixteenth century, and no new orders of importance or new types have arisen since that time. It was impracticable in the majority of instances to consult original sources, although intermediate authorities have been studied as widely as possible and the greatest caution has been exercised to avoid those errors, which naturally arise from the use of such avenues of information. Almost every phase of human life is encountered in such an undertaking. Attention is divided between hermits, beggars, diplomatists, statesmen, professors, missionaries, and pontiffs. It is hoped the critical or literary student will appreciate the immense difficulties of an attempt to paint so vast a scene on so small a canvas.

This category of heritage includes, their national ancestry, perhaps their family tree beyond a few generations, not alone their spiritual heritage. Indeed many will be quick to tell you their fundamental denomination’s beliefs, and perhaps some of their own beliefs and certain aspects of their dogma. Yet, they will not be able to carry it beyond these same few. The truth is, Christian Creeds persuades us of its truth, not only by reason of its history and its perfect accord with our moral and spiritual needs, but also because it is the clear goal at which our intellect strives in groping fashion to arrive. History, conscience, and intellect are three distinct sources of argument which converge towards a concordant testimony to the reality and truth of the Christian knowledge and understanding. Angela takes us into a world of reconciliation and hold and presents a simple yet thorough support in the Eucharist, Scriptures, and prayer. Angela’s Spirituality is a deep and personal recognition of just how far we have drifted from God, Christ’s life and sacrifice to reconcile us to Himself and our return and rest in His complete service to us. Similar to Bernard, Francis and others she contends that love is an essential component, which is infused within us, drawing us to Him, whom our hearts seek. Her message can be summed up in a straight forward and simple concept, “Christ’s death, burial and resurrection is the summation of our reconciliation of mankind to God.

Thomas’s intention as he points out within this text, was to redirect and be as a guide for those of the cloistered community. As a scribe, he was easily accessible to numerous manuscripts, from which he selected numerous instructions, which he formulated into a four part treatise. The format of a four part formulary was consistent with numerous other books and manuscripts, which he was busily about copying, editing and cataloguing. Payer is an offering up of our desires unto God for the things agreeable to His will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins and thankful acknowledgement of His mercies. There are three degrees of prayer. The lowest is what is spoken only by the lips, the second is when by a resolute effort; we succeed in fixing our thoughts on Divine things. The third is when our soul finds it hard to turn away from God. Real prayer at its highest and best reveals a soul thirsting for God alone. Vision is always a precursor of vocation and venture. The highest result of prayer is not deliverance from evil, or the securing of some coveted thing, but knowledge of God. Answers to prayer however do not depend upon our feelings, but upon the trustworthiness of the Promiser. Why is my prayer ineffective? Why are our prayers ineffective, powerless, and sometimes even prayerless? We need to recognize Whom we are approaching, and without reflecting upon the exceedingly great riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.

Many from the humanist's and forward have placed blinders on their eyes and dismiss the past as mere rhetoric, thus erring as she continues, “How plainly and how widely do you err by thinking that anything can be adorned by ornaments that belong to others!” Unlike other pieces of literature, which simply pacifies whims and desires, with no real benefit beyond memories, this work engages, ministers, prompts and causes you to do more than think but truly ponder numerous issues within your life and the world around, and ultimately your relationship with God.

It has influenced religious life for more 16 centuries, thus guiding more than 150 around the world. In communal life, there are factors, which each person brings to the community, and their adherence to the rule varies upon the characteristics of the individuals. The objective of this rule is to create a harmonious environment whereby all participants may ascend in their quest to life a life for God. The idea of service learning also could be said to have roots in the Rule. This becomes apparent at Augustinian educational institutions, where the Rule’s influence can be noticed, although less directly than most of Augustine’s works.

In our daily encounters, there is nothing beyond these two. On hearing that they live lives of prayer and self-sacrifice, the laity are inclined to ask why, and for whom? The answer is that they do so for the good of souls that greatly need both prayer and self-sacrifice. As a cloistered member, you continually are confronted with the strengths and weakness of yourself and those around you. Honesty, integrity, humility, and love are essential, since you have nowhere else to go. You cannot escape, where shall we go? We must confront, address, and deal fairly and honestly with what is presented before us.

From this the very outset, Duns Scotus present us with a dichotomy; displaying before us, our true inability coupled with a truism. In this work, this approach and response is the hallmark of his works. Scotus present his theology/philosophical treaties his ideas of formal distinction and rational distinctions. That is to say the“distinct form” exists midway between the distinct rationality. However, Scotus expounds on his views concerning form and matter. Duns Scotus proposes three important issues, which that sets himself apart from some other philosophers of his day. These are 1) He holds that there exists matter that has no form whatsoever. 2) Not all created substances are composites of form and matter. 3) One and the same substance can have more than one substantial form. This work is a must work for any serious philisophical buff, avid student of theological or any individual who has a real need to know.
