Print: $12.40 Download: $9.07 "Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management" was and is hugely popular. "Know Your Onions" contains recipes and household hints from books and magazines published from about 1820 to the 1860s; books and magazines that may have influenced Mrs Beeton. Some of the recipes and household hints are from Samuel Beeton's "Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine" and may well have been contributed by Mrs Beeton herself.
"Know Your Onions" is a treasure trove jam-packed with old recipes and household hints. In this book you will come across such delights as:
* how to cook and prepare a boar's head (not for the squeamish!);
* how to pacify a cross baby;
* how to restore rancid butter by using animal charcoal;
* a cure for baldness; and much, much more.
If you enjoy cookery books you will love this book.

Print: $8.80 Download: $4.54 Queen Victoria supposedly said "We are not amused". Read "Old Groaners", and you will find some of the conundrums, or riddles, that amused the Victorians.
Why do some persons believe the moon to be made of green cheese? Because of the milky whey that surrounds it.
Which is the way to make your trousers last? To make your coat and waistcoat first.
Why is a guinea in the distance not worth a penny? Because it's only a far-thing.
Why do little birds in a nest agree? Because if they did not, they would fall out.
Why is a dead doctor like a dead duck? Because he has stopped quacking.
What is worse than "raining cats and dogs"?
Hailing omnibuses.

Print: $9.26 Download: $5.68 I recently bought an album of opinions hand-written in the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth century. I would guess that the album was started by a teacher (Maria G.), and that the other entries are by student teachers based in the London area.
The album offers a fascinating glimpse into the interests of "normal" people of the time. Dip into the book and discover examples of contemporary humour, such as in some of the answers to the question " Who is the greatest living composer?" Find out which respondents mentioned medicines; and find out who replied " Not having taken their measure I cannot tell."
The title of the book is Maria G.'s favourite motto.
I decided that the album was too good to remain hidden, and so present the contents for your delectation.

Print: $14.48 Download: $5.68 I often visit the island of Amorgos in the Cyclades in Greece and have taken many photographs of cats. I took most of the photographs in the main port, Katapola.
Amorgos is a very attractive island, and there are many reasons other than cats for visiting the island. Have a look at

Print: $19.06 Download: $5.44 In February 2004 it snowed on the island of Naxos, in the Cyclades in Greece. There was even snow down by the harbour. "Snow in Naxos" contains a selection of my photographs.
I originally put what is now the back cover photo on the front cover. But the photo of Naxos paralia (the sea front) on a snowy day was SO gloomy that I relegated that photo to the back page; and on the front page there is now a sunny photograph showing just the glimmer of snow on the distant mountains of Paros!

An ideal present for anyone who enjoys holidays in Greece. Or, go on, treat yourself!
Wrap up warm and enjoy!
NB The photos in the preview may appear in black and white, but the photos in the book are in colour and better quality than in the preview!

Download: $2.27 Christmas is almost here. You've missed the last date for posting paper cards. Look at these images, available to download cheaply as a batch, and select one to send with an email of your own to your family and friends.
These are images I have taken from Victorian Christmas cards and scraps - I've tidied up the often grubby and battered originals using digital techniques to restore the original character of these charming items. I have or will be putting larger copies of these images on one of my Lulu pages. In this selection I have kept the size of the images fairly small so that they are easy to email.
If you are organised and have already posted your snail mail cards, have a look anyway and give yourself a nostalgic treat!
Have a good holiday!

Download: $2.00 These are some of my photograophs of the island of Naxos in Greece.
Some of my photographs of cats in Naxos are under "animals".
The first photograph is of the old pyrgos near the church at Chalki in the centre of Naxos. For years the pyrgos was in a bad condition. I took this photograph in April 2006, when renovations appeared to be almost complete.
