Martin referred to these drawings as "satirical abstracts". The accompanying quotes by Eugene Martin date from the mid-1970's. The drawings that initially accompanied the present aphorisms were accidentally lost in the early 1980’s in Washington D.C. These drawings and the quotes had been included in a special "chapbook"; however, someone borrowed Eugene Martin's chapbook and misplaced it, never to be seen again. Print: $29.00 When Eugene Martin couldn't afford drawing paper in the mid-1970', he would make pen and ink drawings on paper napkins. A hieroglyphic archetype would suddenly appear. He would later incorporate many of these napkin drawings in mixed media collages in the late 1980’s and 1990’s in Washington D.C. and Lafayette LA. Born in Washington D.C., Eugene Martin was a resident of Lafayette from August 1996 until his death on January 1, 2005. This exhibit is Martin’s fourth solo show in downtown Lafayette. The original Ektachrome and Kodachrome slides were taken between 1982 and 1988 and converted to digital files for use in this publication. Marco Leonardi was born in Sanremo on the Italian Riviera in 1933. From the mid-1970’s until his death in 1990, he had made Washington D.C. his home. Leonardi shared his apartment with his close friend, the visual artist Eugene James Martin, from the late 1970’s until 1988. Martin taught him how to look at art and how to focus on photography.
