For submissions of poetry, articles and writing exercises, as well as subscription information, please see www.theotherherald.com or www.tfrice.etsy.com ________________________________________________________________________________________________ AUTHOR INFORMATION: ________________________________________________________________________________________________ GEF RICE is the youth author of "There Are Monsters Coming Out of My Head", a sketch/coloring/dream workbook for all ages, which briefly talks (in Gef's own words) about getting rid of your fears by drawing them out. All book illustrations are from this young artist! Gef's mother can recall, as young as age 7 or 8, he would draw "monsters" and cut the paper into unique shapes, making a kind of "card game" with powers noted on the back of each (we live in a Pokemon age); he would carry these "playing cards" with him in a large manilla envelope to share with family or friends. The publication of this book was as much to encourage him in his own artfulness (now he doesn't have to carry the envelope)... as to share his unique idea with others. Conquering your fears can be a dear topic for both adults and children. Read Gef's message to your children today! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ T. F. RICE is the Editor of The Other Herald, a small Western New York literary publication aimed at youth/elder writers and those otherwise in isolation (whether it be due to a small-town or long-term-care living). Rice can better be described as a "recovering accountant" (other career). Published works include The City/Country Poet's Guide to Old Forge, New York: Memories of Great Times and Perry, NY: Small Towns Are Not So Small, both "crossover" books linking Literature with other hobbies such as Family Travel, Scrap-Booking, and Journaling. She has also authored a book of writing and life exercises. Her first children's book was published in 2007, The Wind Being. Rice lives in Perry, but still travels to Old Forge in the wintertime with her husband and son, where they adventure on snowmobile while she writes for long hours. More "Guides" are planned, as well as other "crossover" books, part of a lifetime goal to make poetry more accessible. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ ARTIST INFORMATION: ________________________________________________________________________________________________ JOAN HERRMANN, Photographer and Illustrator, provided her "Nature Tweaked" cover art for T. F. Rice's Small Towns Are Not So Small. Her concentration is nature photography, which she manipulates using various artful, albeit unnatural, processes. The colors/textures in her work are often manipulated/enhanced by geometric forms with a Chinese influence. She is a former member of the Utica Camera Club and a current member of the Artworks Artist Co-op in Old Forge, New York. The Co-op offers several types of note cards bearing her art. Her work has been exhibited all over New York state. She is a docent for the Munson-Williams Art Museum. She and her husband Bob moved from Rochester to the Adirondacks 12 years ago. Herrmann's love of nature began as a child, she says, and she enjoys sharing this love through her photography and nature programs for both children and adults. Herrmann says, "I still have the passion to photograph what I see in nature, but I enjoy tweaking nature too." _________________________________________________________________________________________________ MICHAEL SPARLING a.k.a. "Mr. Scribbles!" is an artist and cartoonist from Perry New York. He has illustrated several children's books, including Earlene Crocker's "The Heart Flowers" and T. F. Rice's "My Celebration" (to be released in 2008). His art includes large murals, landscapes, abstracts, portraits, and much more. You might find him traveling to the ends of the earth, for your local event... dazzling children of all ages with creative interpretations of anyone's whimsical scribblings. On www.mrscribbles.com, you can visit his online gallery, scribble something (that he will turn into art), even download FREE CLIP ART! _________________________________________________________________________________________________ For those books not appearing in Bowker's Books in Print, Publisher accepts wholesale inquiries. SEPTEMBER WRITING EXERCISE: Give someone else a gift of writing & it will come back to you!

Sometimes we are willing to spend more time on others than on ourselves, so much so that it takes a challenge such as this to open our eyes to our own needs for inspiration. Are you up for a challenge?

Think about a person you know who is creative, likes to write poetry or stories. Find a box somewhere around your house that you don’t mind parting with.

Fill the box with little trinkets, odd items to inspire. Examples: an old key, cancelled foreign stamp, article, photo, fun paper, coin, bead, shell, written list of interesting words, an item you no longer want but has a story, map to favorite writing spot (mapquest is ok).

Decorate the box, or leave it “as is”. On box top, glue this explanation and your own note that they should pass the box on, with new or the same items.

This task of making a gift of inspiration for someone else has shown you some of what you need for inspiration (and may not take the time for). Now, write.

  • SECOND IN "POET'S GUIDE" SERIES TO BE RELEASED!

    2007 Sep 12

SMALL TOWNS ARE NOT SO SMALL by T. F. Rice

Coming soon in the autumn of 2007, a second "Guide" will be published: The City/Country Poet's Guide to Perry, New York: Small Towns Are Not So Small, where again Rice all but requires "reader-participation" and encourages the reader to "cozy-up" to something they once found frightening: POETRY!

The City/Country Poet's Guide to Old Forge, New York: Memories of Great Times was the first in this fun series, a "crossover" book linking Literature with other hobbies such as Family Travel, Scrapbooking and Journaling. Small Towns Are Not So Small includes similar activities without duplication of any.

Some included topics/activities are: Creek-walking, nothing to do?, talk of ideas, writing and sketching, photos and space for your photos, lined journal pages, prompt for contemplation for a new year, a listing of local wildflowers that may be seen, local fun facts, a comic by Mr. Scribbles aka Michael Sparling, black and white family painting (image) of Letchworth Park ready for reader to add colors of choice, historical news and funnies, legend of the Silver Lake Sea Serpent, and much more!
