Eli Novotny is an introverted 20-something artist living in an anonymous high-rise flat in an anonymous upper-midwestern city. Eli isolates himself in art and antipathy, only occasionally venturing out into a pseudo-bohemian milieu of wannabe rockers and posturing artistes. His best friend is his polar opposite: a pretty-boy guitarist named Seth, who has all but given up on drawing Eli out of his spiny shell. One afternoon, Eli’s stagnating life takes a turn when his next-door neighbor, Tina– a married woman in her 40’s– kisses him in the hallway of his apartment building. The ensuing affair, however taboo, seems like the beginning and end of Eli’s life and the salvation of his art– that is, until he meets Tina’s beautiful 17-year-old son.
